SHAIKMOHIDEEN Seeking the early appointment of a doctor in the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) in their area, a group of residents from Oorudaiyarpuram here submitted a petition to Deputy Mayor K.R. Raju during the weekly grievances redress meeting held at the Corporation on Tuesday. In a petition, the residents of Oorudaiyarpuram said the doctor serving in the UPHC in their area was transferred to some other UPHC a couple of months ago. However, no doctor was appointed to the Oorudaiyarpuram UPHC as the replacement of the transferred doctor.Consequently, the patients of Oorudaiyarpuram, particularly the senior citizens, pregnant women and children, have to go all the way to the UPHC at Thatchanallur after taking the bus or autorickshaw.Hence, the Corporation should appoint a doctor at the earliest in the Oorudaiyarpuram UPHC, the petitioners appealed.Congress party’s Tirunelveli district deputy president C. Kavipandian submitted a petition seeking the removal of garbage heaped in Velavar Colony First Street near Maharaja Nagar. He said the branches of trees and the garbage had been heaped on vacant land on the first street of Velavar Colony.Since the garbage mound was sheltering poisonous snakes, the Corporation should remove it immediately, considering the safety of the residents, Mr. Kavipandian said.A good number of petitions were submitted by the residents seeking the relaying of roads dug for the underground drainage work. Though sewage pipes and manholes had been laid, the Corporation refuses to relay the damaged roads and give any positive reply in this connection to the petitioners.“At least five petitions seeking repair or relaying of the roads damaged in the underground drainage work are submitted during the grievances redress meetings every Tuesday, as pipes and manholes have already been laid there. However, the Corporation collecting hefty taxes from the residents, adamantly refuses to act on these petitions for providing the basic infrastructure and is not even ready to give any reply. It only shows the lethargic and uncaring attitude of the Corporation and its officials, who turn a blind eye to the genuine grievances of the residents,” said Nellai Jaffar of Vadakku Dargah Street in Melapalayam, after submitting a petition seeking the re-laying of Asad Road in his area.A few more petitions complaining about the sewage flowing along the roads due to the blocks in the underground drainage pipes were also submitted. One of the petitions submitted by the residents pointed out the problems they are facing from the sewage tanker lorries that discharge the sewage collected from various parts of the city near their houses on the North Bypass Road in the night.“At times, they even release the sewage along the roads branching out from the North Bypass Road,” said M. Maharaja, one of the signatories of the petition. Published - August 25, 2026 07:12 pm IST
