Amex Confirms Platinum’s $300 Hotel Credit Will Require 2 Nights Starting January 1—Adds Airbnb Luxe Option

American Express’s website now confirms that Fine Hotels & Resorts bookings will require a two-night stay to qualify for Platinum’s $300 semi-annual credit, effective January 1, 2027. This applies to both U.S. personal and Business Platinum cards. I reported on October 14 that this change appeared to be coming, after a USCardForum member found language on Amex’s test site. That language is now in Amex’s public benefit terms: Effective January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts® bookings will require a minimum two-night stay to be eligible for the $600 Lodging Credit. The amount remains up to $300 for January through June and another $300 for July through December. The Hotel Collection already requires two nights. Fine Hotels & Resorts has been the way to use the credit on a single night. (The new wording restricts the statement credit. It doesn’t impose a two-night minimum for FHR’s breakfast, property credit or guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout.) Amex’s FAQ says the credit period follows the processed prepaid charge and travel can take place later. Presumably a one-night stay prepaid in 2026 for travel in 2027 still qualifies for the current treatment. Amex is also adding Airbnb benefits, just as the test site suggested. The Hotel Credit becomes a Lodging Credit, with eligible prepaid Airbnb Luxe bookings through Amex Travel included. Those require at least two nights as well. There’s also up to $250 per calendar year in Airbnb Experiences statement credits for personal and Business Platinum. You first have to make a qualifying prepaid Airbnb Luxe booking through Amex Travel. Once it’s confirmed, you can use the Experiences credit directly with Airbnb through the end of that calendar year. Cancelling the qualifying Luxe booking can cause the Experiences credits to be reversed. I expect this to be a niche benefit for most. When Platinum was refreshed in September 2025, I specifically asked Amex whether one-night FHR stays would still qualify, because I knew that as far back as fall 2022 this change had been discussed. They confirmed the one-night option survived that refresh. Not any longer, though. A longer stay generates more hotel booking revenue against the same $300 reimbursement. Using a hypothetical 20% commission: A $400 stay for one night produces $80 in commission. An $800 stay over two nights produces $160, covering more than half of the $300 credit. It’s lower net cost to Amex with two nights, plus if the extra night causes a cardmember to give up on using the credit altogether, there’s breakage. I’ve been enthusiastic about the Platinum card refresh card because the benefits deliver substantial value. Amex has reported the card has done really well with uptake, but that just shows that you can give people money and they’ll take it. The Resy credit bribes people to spend at restaurants on Amex’s platform. Amex gets to tout both Platinum adoption and Resy growth. The business works if customers come for the benefits and then put a disproportionate amount of their other spending on the card. Amex says that’s happening. But the amount of spending they’ve been putting behind it is huge, and culturally they can’t resist spreadsheet tweaks to manage the P&L. For someone who already books two-night FHR stays, the new requirement doesn’t matter much. Personally I’ve used it for both one- and two-night stays (and used two night Hotel Collection stays as well). I’ll adapt, rather than giving up the card, but this does reduce its value.
