Amazon’s disturbingly specific tracking data can tell if you have ‘flat buttocks’ or ‘cannot keep real plants alive’

Some entries are bizarrely personal or funny, and often come off like Amazon is roasting you. To check out the weird data points for yourself, follow these steps: Account > Shopping Preferences > About You. At this point, we all know pretty much everything we do is tracked on the internet, but I didn't realize Amazon collects data on its users at such a granular level. In what's turned into a minor viral moment, people are discovering the weird things Amazon knows (or at least thinks it knows) about you in its About You menu. It all started when Threads user @fangirlinmegan explained that they stumbled across an Amazon Product Preferences listing stating that they have a "flat buttocks" (via The Verge). Other users quickly chimed in with their own odd data points, including, "Likes brunettes with muscles," "Cannot keep real plants alive," "Is not a big Spongebob fan," "Has no friends," and more. While some posts in the Threads chat are likely AI-generated jokes, many are real and undeniably weird. At times, it almost feels like Amazon is straight-up roasting its customers and that these funny descriptions are actually designed to go viral. Of course, some people's results are far more tame. When I asked the XDA team for a couple of submissions for this story, far more normal-sounding things showed up for our team, including "Consistently repurchases essential consumables," "Prefers Pampers brand for diapers," "Home Cleaning Supplies," and my personal favorite, "Shows strong preference for unicorn-themed products." Amazon is tracking your buying habits more than you likely think Most of the About You Shopping Preferences are oddly specific Amazon, of course, pulls all this information from your purchasing habits and then tries to draw conclusions. Unfortunately, since I live in Canada, I can't take a look at my Shopping Preferences, though I'm sure they would be something like, "Buys a lot of phone cases and screen protectors." At least right now, this amusing and oddly specific feature seems exclusive to the United States. If you want to check out your (possibly) wild Shopping Preferences, all you need to do is tap the account icon in the top-right corner of your screen, scroll down to Your Account, and tap Shopping Preferences." From there, scroll down and select About You.
