She has a BA in Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, along with minors in English Studies and Game Design / Animation. Baldur's Gate 3 has a cast of captivating characters, but Astarion, the roguish vampire spawn, quickly became an internet sensation for his enthralling narrative, exceptional voice acting, and sassy flair. As expected of a game teeming with narrative intricacies, Astarion's tale offers numerous branches. The lines between right and wrong are often blurred, and an ending that seems like the ideal resolution might be the most tragic one yet. It's even possible to lose Astarion before reaching the climax of his arc. This guide aims to help you navigate the maze of possibilities and ensure you reach your ideal ending with Astarion, whatever that may be. Updated on October 29, 2026, by Kaitlyn Peterson: This article has been reformatted to help you find the information you're looking for quicker, and we've also included a few more details to ensure you make the right decisions for the outcome you want! All Possible Astarion Endings Astarion is one of the first companions you can meet in the game. You can find him near the Nautiloid crash site by going through the hole in the crashed ship at (X:266, Y269), then following the path north until you see him crying out for help. Astarion's personal storyline also kicks into action early in the game, with some of his storyline events occurring within the first couple of long rests. The table below details each of Astarion's personal story events that might influence his personal ending. Each event and its possible options will be discussed in more detail in the following sections. Act Location Event Possible Outcomes 1 At camp, during a long rest (Usually occurs after finding a dead boar near the Blighted Village or in the forest by Scratch.) Astarion tries to drink your blood during a long rest. Allow him to do it: Gain approval with Astarion. Disallow him to do it and tell him to leave: Astarion leaves your party permanently. Stake him in the heart: Believe it or not, Astarion dies. 1 Riverside Teahouse Gandrel the monster hunter tells you he is hunting Astarion. Give Astarion to Gandrel / Tell Gandrel where to find Astarion: Astarion is captured and presumably dies. Help Astarion kill Gandrel: Gain approval with Astarion. 2 Moonrise Towers Araj Oblodra asks you to force Astarion to bite her. Respect Astarion's wishes: Gain approval with Astarion Force Astarion to bite Araj: Risk him leaving your party and ends any possibility of having a relationship with him 2 At camp, during a long rest (Only occurs if you are romancing Astarion) Astarion admits to you that he is uncomfortable with physical intimacy due to his torment under Cazador Encourage or strongarm Astarion to continue a physical relationship with you: Risk him leaving your party, ending any possibility of having a relationship with him Reassure Astarion to do what he's comfortable with: Gain approval with Astarion 3 Cazador's Dungeon Your party breaks into Cazador's Palace to stop the Rite of Profane Ascension. Allow Astarion to ascend: Astarion becomes Vampire Ascendant and permanently changes. Convince him not to ascend: Astarion kills Cazador and remains himself. Disallow him from ascending: Astarion reluctantly kills Cazador and leaves the party afterward. Disrupt the ritual: Astarion turns against your party and fights to the death. Kill Cazador without him: Risk him leaving your party, ending any possibility of having a relationship with him. Should You Let Astarion Drink Your Blood Early in the game, Astarion will attempt to drink your blood during a long rest. You'll catch him doing this and learn his rather poorly-kept secret: he's a vampire spawn. From here on, you'll be given the following options: Kill him (DC 14, Strength) Refuse to let him drink your blood. Refuse to let him drink your blood and tell him to leave your party. Allow him to indulge. If you kill him or tell him to get lost, this encounter will end Astarion's storyline right then and there. Otherwise, this event is one of the best opportunities to win some of the rogue's notoriously scarce favor during Act One, especially if you plan on romancing Astarion. That said, if you fail a check here, you may also find yourself completely exsanguinated by morning's light. Letting Astarion drink your blood here will enhance his combat ability and permanently give him the Vampire Bite action. If Astarion's an integral team member, it might be worth letting him have the occasional nibble. Should You Give Astarion To Gandrel Gandrel the Gur is a vampire hunter found at (X:-26, Y:242) near Auntie Ethel's Riverside Teahouse, is on a quest to hunt down Astarion. You'll be faced with the following choices: Surrender Astarion to Gandrel. Defend Astarion and kill Gandrel Ignore Gandrel (and prevent Astarion from fighting him) By either exposing Astarion's identity or directing Gandrel to your camp, Astarion will be taken away, ending his personal story and removing him from your game permanently. Siding against Gandrel will help you gain Astarion's approval and advance his personal story. Post-battle, Astarion will confide in you about his tragic past involving the Vampire Lord Cazador and speculate about Gandrel's affiliation with Cazador. Should You Tell Astarion To Bite Araj In Act Two, you will encounter Araj Oblodra (X:-125, Y:-190), a drow scientist in the lower levels of Moonrise Towers. She badly wants to get bitten by a vampire and will offer you a potion that grants a permanent +2 Strength boost in exchange. Astarion can sense that her blood is poisonous and does not want to debase himself like this. You'll have the following choices: Respect Astarion's boundaries Force the bite Forcing Astarion to bite Araj here will strain your relationship with him and risk him leaving your party permanently, whereas respecting his wishes will lead to a cutscene in the next long rest that explores more of Astarion's personal story. What To Say To Astarion During Act Two Romance If you are romancing Astarion and have a high approval rating with him, at some point during Act Two, he will approach you and confide in you his discomfort with physical intimacy due to what he has had to do during his time enslaved by Cazador. You'll have the following options: Reassure Astarion that you are happy to take the relationship at his own comfortable pace. Encourage Astarion to continue a carnal relationship to bury his trauma. Guilt Astarion into continuing a physical relationship with you. If you choose the latter two options or any option that results in Astarion feeling pressured to continue having a physical relationship with you, you will end any possibility of continuing a relationship with him and risk him leaving your party. Should You Let Astarion Ascend In Act Three, you'll need to find Cazador's Palace in Baldur's Gate to complete Astarion's story. There, Cazador is holding a Rite of Profane Ascension. This is the climax of Astarion's personal story, where you will ultimately determine his fate. Here's a breakdown of your options: Supporting Astarion's ascension: An ascended Astarion will gain several powerful combat abilities. However, this choice permanently alters Astarion's demeanor and personality to become more "evil." Persuading Astarion not to ascend: You can convince Astarion not to go through with the ritual with a Persuasion check, leading him to simply kill Cazador in a very cathartic manner. This route results in a more benevolent and "good" Astarion. This option will also lead to the pivotal decision of whether to kill Cazador's vampire spawn. Denying Astarion's Request You can blatantly forbid Astarion from continuing the ascension ritual. Like option two, Astarion will refrain from ascending and simply kill Cazador. Regardless of your relationship with him before this, however, Astarion will be disappointed and leave your party permanently. To be frank, this is the worst decision you can make, as you lose Astarion completely with no benefit. Interrupting the Ritual: You can allow Astarion to begin ascending but interrupt the ritual halfway by killing Cazador before it completes. This will make Astarion furious and force you to fight him to the death. This is also not a great way to end Astarion's story, but not as bad as option 3 since it still results in an interesting situation and fight. The Rite of Profane Ascension presents several complex choices with far-reaching implications. Our article about deciding to let Astarion ascend will guide you through every nuance of this pivotal decision. Vampire Ascendant Astarion Vs. Vampire Spawn Astarion Ultimately, if Astarion does not leave your party and survives to this point in the game, his storyline can be broken down into two endings: one where he becomes the Vampire Ascendant, and one where he remains a Vampire Spawn. If you do multiple playthroughs, I highly recommend testing both of Astarion's endings to see how they play out. Vampire Ascendant Astarion If you allow Astarion to go through with the ascendant ritual, the following things occur: Astarion seemingly becomes more confident and happy on the surface. That being said, if you cast Detect Thoughts on him, he believes you to be degrading yourself by staying with him, revealing a secret continued lack of self-confidence and respect. Astarion gains more raw combat power, and it's implied that his powers will continue to grow exponentially after the game's ending. However, Vampire Ascendant Astarion also permanently changes, becoming more arrogant, cruel, and power-hungry. If you are currently romancing him, he will become uncomfortably possessive and domineering, viewing you as an object or pet. Vampire Ascendant Astarion will offer to turn you into a vampire spawn but skirts around the topic of allowing you to become a full vampire. Given the notes you can find in Cazador's room about Cazador's former master, it is heavily implied that the cycle of cruelty will continue and Astarion will eventually become the same as Cazador. Vampire Spawn Astarion If you persuade Astarion against going through with the ascendant ritual, the following things occur: Astarion becomes genuinely more confident and happy. Astarion expresses his gratitude for your guidance in making the "right decision." If you are currently romancing him, a cutscene will occur where he leads you to his "grave" and explains how he was turned by Cazador. He will thank you for giving him a chance during your adventures together. A romance scene can play out here at his grave, if you choose to engage. If you defeat the Absolute, Astarion will regain the typical vampire spawn weaknesses, such as vulnerability to sunlight, and begin to burn in the sun. This will result in an ending cutscene where he laments losing his ability to walk in the sun, but he expresses hope of living his life in true freedom one day. If romancing, you are present with him and are actively searching to find a cure to his vampirism.
