Sign in to your ScreenRant account While Disney’s Wednesday clone might be unabashedly indebted to the Netflix show, that hasn’t stopped it from earning a second season renewal. The line between inspiration and straightforward copying is always a thin one, and this is particularly true on television. For some viewers, SyFy’s superb Killjoys was a sorely underrated space opera that deserves to be seen as Firefly’s spiritual successor, while others felt the cult hit borrowed too much from the earlier one-season wonder. Similarly, while some viewers might still feel that Netflix’s short-lived adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic book series Jupiter’s Legacy deserved another outing, many critics watched the R-rated superhero satire and saw a knockoff of Prime Video’s The Boys. Thus, it is hardly surprising that, since Netflix’s Addams Family spinoff Wednesday is one of the streaming service’s biggest hits ever, Disney came up with a series that looked strikingly similar to the Jenna Ortega vehicle. Where earlier screen adaptations of The Addams Family franchise focused on the entire eponymous clan, Wednesday uproots its title character and brings her to Nevermore Academy, a magical school populated by werewolves, witches, monsters, and other outcasts. While this setup has a bit in common with Disney’s Percy Jackson & The Olympians, the recent Disney show Coven Academy is even closer to the Netflix hit. However, these similarities have not stopped the show from earning a second season renewal. Despite Being A Wednesday Clone, Coven Academy Is Genuinely Good Set in another magical high school that is also populated by teens with supernatural powers, Coven Academy is obviously creatively indebted to Wednesday. Coven Academy has Crescent Veil Academy where Wednesday has Nevermore Academy, but both shows focus on independent new students who are defined by their cynical personality and standoffish attitude until they eventually warm up to their classmates. Malina Weissman’s Briar goes through a similar character arc to Ortega’s Wednesday in Coven Academy season 1, although the acclaimed Disney show does borrow from a few other choice sources, too. The show’s love triangle is as indebted to Young Adult shows like The Vampire Diaries as it is to Wednesday, while some of the titular school’s wilder events owe something to that CW hit’s spinoff Legacies. Coven Academy’s Briar/ Tegan friendship might owe a lot to Wednesday and Enid’s bond thanks to their contrasting personalities, but her slow-burn relationship with Sasha is more reminiscent of the thorny female friendships found in Charmed and its reboot. Meanwhile, the presence of ‘90s icons like Devon Sawa and Tiffani Thiessen mean that Coven Academy arguably feels more like a spiritual sequel to Sabrina the Teenage Witch than Netflix’s earlier official reboot Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. What To Expect From Coven Academy Season 2 Thus, although Coven Academy would likely not have been green lit without the breakout global success of Wednesday, the Disney show has proven that it can stand on its own merits. As Disney prepares an animated Artemis Fowl adaptation, the company is proving once again that they remain one of the first names in YA streaming shows. Season 2 of Coven Academy also has plenty of ground to cover in terms of story thanks to season 1’s game-changing finale surprises. One major twist completely changed the relationship between Briar and the eponymous school’s Headmaster, while Ollie’s decision to reveal his vampiric nature will be a major plot in the show’s sophomore outing. The cloud that hung over the academy in the finale clearly sets up future supernatural threats to the institution, while the fate of Sasha’s mysterious brother Mason will also be a major storyline. Between them, these plots give the soapy series plenty of directions to go in beyond focusing on Briar alone. Thus, Disney’s Wednesday clone Coven Academy may ironically be prepared to outdo its inspiration in season 2.
