After 14 Years, Solo Leveling's Home Is Officially Shutting Down In 2026

Both the webtoon that inspired the anime sensation as well as the web novel that started it all have both been hosted on Tapas since 2021, with recent years even seeing the addition of Solo Leveling's sequel web novel and webtoon, Solo Leveling: Ragnarok. However, after being the go-to for all things Solo Leveling for all these years, the end of an era is upon us. As its biggest rival platform, Webtoon is making strides with fun collaborations and global launches like The Warrior's Ballad, Tapas has just announced its shutdown, and the news is making waves through the vertical-scrolling comic circles. Solo Leveling's North American Webtoon Home Is Shutting Down As reported by Korean business outlets like Maeil Business on September 21, Kakao Entertainment, who acquired Tapas for $800 million back in 2021 will be shutting down Tapas, the popular webtoon and manhwa platform that hosts many beloved comics like Solo Leveling and Solo Leveling: Ragnarok but also The Beginning After The End, Villains Are Destined to Die, Pick Me Up, and many more. This move is part of a plan to consolidate Kakao Page and Kakao Webtoon under a single unified brand by the end of 2026, and as a result, the North American platform, Tapas had to be shut down. Admittedly, in retrospect there may have been signs of this shutdown as only recently Tapas faced criticism for shutting down various events allowing readers to earn free Ink, the currency used to unlock chapters. However, amidst this unexpected restructuring, there are still many unanswered questions and doubts as to how this will affect Tapas' print releases and existing partnerships with various publishers such as Dark Horse Books, InkLore, Ize Press, Yen Press, and more. Although, perhaps the biggest question is what will happen to various ongoing titles such as Solo Leveling: Ragnarok. What Tapas' Shutdown Means For Solo Leveling Custom Image by Hannah Diffey Perhaps the biggest concern currently arising among fans amidst the termination of Tapas' services is the future of Solo Leveling and its sequel now that its most popular reading home is gone. Solo Leveling's original webtoon and web novel have long been complete but Solo Leveling: Ragnarok only recently wrapped up its web novel in July of last year. And, the final chunk of the English release of these chapters made their way to Tapas even more recently on August 9, 2026. Most importantly, however, Solo Leveling: Ragnarok's webtoon is still on hiatus awaiting its return. The series went on an indefinite break back in January 2026 and is most likely expected to return sometime in 2027 at latest. However, with Tapas gone, many fans are sure to feel lost as to where to catch these new chapters when the series inevitably returns. Fortunately, while it may not be as widespread as Tapas, Solo Leveling: Ragnarok is also available on Tappytoon, which is likely to surge in popularity now that Tapas is out of the picture. All that said, while there are still alternatives it is still a shame that Tapas was shut down given that the platform had been running for 14 years before being acquired by Kakao and now shut down. Kakao may very well launch a Western alternative platform under a unified brand name but until then, no doubt, this shift will lead to losing many readers to piracy and scans, while also greatly discouraging individual and insipirinng webtoon creators.
