ABC’s Best Sitcom Officially Gets a ’70s Makeover Ahead of Season 6 [Exclusive]

With a mind like a steel trap, he's an endless fount of movie and TV trivia, borne from a misspent youth of watching monster movies on TV, perusing the sun-faded goods at the local video rental shop, and staining his fingers with ink from the Video Movie Guide. Areas of interest include science fiction, film noir, horror flicks, '70s disaster pictures, Bond movies, '90s action, giant robots, dinosaurs, super heroes, and the exuberantly schlocky output of Cannon Films. He also enjoys both Star Trek and Star Wars when they're good, and maybe even more when they're bad. As a Canadian, he also has a vested interest in Canadian movies and TV shows, especially the cheesier ones dubbed "Canuxploitation." An expert on Marvel Comics, he has also written for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and is a member of the Marvel Research Team. He can frequently be found pontificating on comic-book continuity or bemoaning the misfortunes of the Toronto Maple Leafs on his Twitter account. The hit ABC sitcom is headed back to class for Season 6 next month, and to celebrate, the show is taking a decidedly retro approach to promotion. Collider is proud to exclusively present Abbott House Rock!, a new animated teaser for Season 6 in the style of the classic educational series Schoolhouse Rock!. Last season was a difficult one for the students, teachers, and staff of inner-city Philadelphia primary school Abbott Elementary. The long-neglected school's furnace finally gave up the ghost, prompting the entire operation to move to an abandoned Philadelphia mall for a three-episode arc. Even after the furnace issue was resolved, the school was nearly shut down, but narrowly avoided closure during a district conference in Miami. Meanwhile, Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) had their relationship put to the test when they moved in together, and subsequently had their first fight and breakup before reconciling. He's going to face an all-new challenge this season, however, as the influx of students from other shuttered schools has resulted in his promotion to assistant principal. In the new 1970s-style animated promo, the retro-animated faculty of Abbott, all voiced by their live-action counterparts, sing "Underfunded," an homage to Schoolhouse Rock!'s "Conjunction Junction." The staff are once more attempting to raise money to keep the crumbling Abbott in operation (at least, that's what Ava (Janelle James) says the money is for). In the final total, after expenses — and Melissa's hamster, Sweet Cheeks, eating some of it — they've raised $7. But that's appropriate, because they then break into "Seven Is a Magic Number," an homage to the classic series' "Three Is a Magic Number."
