Hotel Wi-Fi has ruined enough quiet evenings for me that I stopped trusting it before I even checked in. Sometimes it works well enough, right up until the stream buffers at the worst possible moment or the captive portal decides I need to sign in again. I got tired of making my entertainment plans around a network I had no control over, so I put together a smaller Jellyfin server on a mini PC specifically for travel. The idea was simple enough: bring the media with me, keep playback local, and let the hotel connection deal with email and restaurant searches instead. Keeping playback local fixed the weakest part of traveling The hotel connection no longer controlled my evening plans The first thing I noticed was how much less I thought about the connection once playback stayed local. I didn’t need to run a speed test, lower the quality, or wait to see whether the hotel network would hold together after everyone came back for the night. Jellyfin served the files from the mini PC, so the part I actually cared about never left the room. I could open the library, pick something, and start watching without treating the first five minutes as a network stability test. That doesn’t mean every hotel network is terrible. Plenty of them are fine for checking messages, looking up directions, or reading for a while. Video is where the cracks tend to show, especially when the building fills up, and dozens of people are all trying to do the same thing. I’d rather not spend an evening wondering whether the next scene is going to freeze because someone three floors down started a large download. Keeping the media local also got rid of the usual scramble before a trip. I wasn’t downloading a few episodes into one app, a movie into another, and then trying to remember which device had what on it. Everything lived in one Jellyfin library, arranged the way I already expected. It felt less like a collection of backups and more like a smaller, purpose-built version of the setup I use at home. That was the wrong question. The better question was what I might actually watch while I was away, because copying everything would have meant more storage, more transfer time, and more clutter for no real benefit. Once I stopped treating the mini PC as a full mirror of the home server, the whole idea became much easier to manage. The smaller library was also nicer to browse than I expected. I wasn’t digging through a huge catalog or scrolling past things I knew I wouldn’t watch on that trip. Jellyfin still gave me covers, seasons, titles, and the rest of the familiar layout, but the selection was tighter and more intentional. That made it feel less like I had brought a server with me and more like I had packed a media shelf for the week. That interface mattered more than the technical side once the setup was running. A folder full of files would have worked, but it would also have felt like a compromise every time I used it. Jellyfin kept everything readable and organized without making me think about filenames or directory structures. By the time I sat down to watch something, I wasn’t really interacting with a mini PC anymore. I was using the same kind of library I was already used to. Building a travel server adds more work before departure The setup is useful, but it is not effortless The part that almost undercuts the whole idea is the setup. Offline downloads in a streaming app are easier because the service handles most of the ugly details for you. A Jellyfin mini PC doesn’t. The server has to be configured, the media has to be copied, and the whole thing needs to be tested before it goes into a bag. That last step matters, and it’s easy to skip when everything appears fine at home. A travel setup that only works after a few minutes of tinkering isn’t much of a travel setup. I didn’t want to arrive at a hotel and discover that I had forgotten something basic, or that the files I expected to use weren’t actually ready. The entire point was to avoid troubleshooting at the end of the day, not introduce a new category of troubleshooting. Test the entire setup without internet access before you leave. Disconnect the mini PC and playback device from your normal internet connection, then confirm that Jellyfin still opens, the library loads, and several files play correctly. Testing while you’re still at home gives you a chance to catch missing media or other setup problems before they become hotel-room troubleshooting. There’s also no getting around the fact that it’s one more device. The mini PC needs space, power, and a place in a bag that already has enough chargers and small boxes. For a one-night stay, this would be hard to justify unless I already knew I wanted the setup with me. It makes more sense for longer trips, where a little preparation pays off more than once. Reliable local playback matters more when internet access stays unpredictable Even with the extra work, the setup still wins for me because the problem it solves keeps coming back. Hotel Wi-Fi isn’t unreliable in one consistent, predictable way. Sometimes it’s slow, sometimes the signal is weak in the room, and sometimes it looks fine until the network gets busy. I can’t fix any of that from a hotel desk, but I can remove it from the playback path entirely. The payoff becomes clearer after more than one evening. The effort happens before the trip, while the benefit repeats every time I open Jellyfin and play something without checking the connection first. On a longer stay, that matters. I’d rather spend a little time preparing once than repeat the same cycle of testing, adjusting, and hoping every night. It also helped to keep the project narrow. I didn’t need the travel server to copy every feature of the main setup or behave like a second permanent installation. It only needed to hold a selected library and play it reliably without outside access. Once I stopped adding imaginary requirements, the setup complexity felt less annoying and more reasonable. I didn’t build this because I believe every hotel network is unusable. I built it because even a good hotel network is still someone else’s network, and I don’t want that deciding whether a movie plays properly. Jellyfin on a mini PC gave me a familiar library, local playback, and a setup I could prepare before leaving home. It took more work than tapping a download button, but it also solved the problem in a way I could reuse. The best part wasn’t the mini PC itself or the satisfaction of carrying another server around. It got me to stop thinking about the Wi-Fi once I reached the room. I could use the hotel connection for the things it handled well and ignore it for the part that had annoyed me on previous trips. That small shift made the whole setup worthwhile, because hotel Wi-Fi finally became background information instead of part of the evening’s plan.
