Over the years, Marvel Studios has dabbled in all sorts of genres and tones, but one area that feels undersaturated at this point is horror. Released in 2022, Werewolf by Night remains the MCU's only true horror entry. At the time, much was said about the implications of the various characters that Werewolf by Night brought into the picture. Thanks to its horror roots and subject material, Werewolf by Night was able to adapt a handful of Marvel's most important supernatural heroes, and not just its titular monster. It also introduced Elsa Bloodstone and Man-Thing, whose respective debuts launched a great deal of speculation as to the stories they could factor into at later dates. Unfortunately, Marvel has yet to do anything further with Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing, or Werewolf by Night. It's worth noting that these weren't the only Werewolf by Night characters with great storytelling potential for the MCU's supernatural future. Another character, one who had a very small role, would have been the perfect protagonist for a horror-themed Marvel project. Based on his comic history, the father of Elsa Bloodstone doesn't get the attention he deserves. Ulysses Bloodstone In Marvel Comics Explained Introduced in 1975's Marvel Presents #1, Ulysses Bloodstone was an immortal superhero recognized for his white safari jacket, long blond hair, and large red rock fragment protruding from his chest. Thanks to the rock, known as the Bloodstone, Ulysses possessed an enhanced level of strength and a healing factor on par with Wolverine's. Adding to his formability in battle was his centuries of experience in all manner of physical combat. His powers and longevity stemmed from an incident that took place thousands of years ago. As an ordinary young man growing up in a now-forgotten European village, Ulysses was caught in a fight with an otherworldly being called Ulluxy'l Kwan Tae Syn, whose goal was to obtain the Bloodstone, which was but a small piece of a meteorite that had crashed on Earth. Instead, the Bloodstone wound up lodged inside Ulysses' chest. Another consequence of his encounter with Ulluxy'l Kwan Tae Syn was the destruction of his village and everyone he cared about. The heartache he endured prompted Ulysses to embark on a relentless quest for revenge. And because of the immortality imparted onto him by the Bloodstone, Ulysses saw his journey span several millennia. His obsession with the creature who took everything from him had helped him evolve into an expert on the various monsters that inhabited the Marvel Universe. Due to his unique talents and wealth of knowledge, Ulysses was able to make a living for himself as a monster hunter for hire. It proved to be a lucrative trade, as Ulysses developed a sizable wealth. The exploits of Ulysses Bloodstone and his band of monster hunters were explored via a backup feature that the hero enjoyed across multiple issues of the black-and-white Marvel Comics magazine, The Rampaging Hulk. The Rampaging Hulk followed Ulysses' modern-day adventures until his death, when he died taking down his lifelong enemy, Ulluxy'l Kwan Tae Syn. Marvel never fully brought back Ulysses Bloodstone, but his legacy lived on regardless. He appeared via flashbacks in other characters' stories and even saw a successor in Elsa Bloodstone when Marvel established that he had a daughter in the early 2000s. Werewolf By Night Introduced A Seemingly Comic Accurate Ulysses Bloodstone In Werewolf by Night, Ulysses Bloodstone was used as the catalyst for the Halloween special's story. The gathering of monster hunters was formed as the result of a will hearing in the wake of his death. The will was read by Ulysses' reanimated corpse. Although the comedic moment was original to the MCU, what Werewolf by Night revealed about Ulysses Bloodstone was notably consistent with his comic book counterpart. Several details match up quite well. Like the comic character, the MCU's Ulysses Bloodstone was an extremely wealthy monster hunter, the owner of a powerful artifact called the Bloodstone, and a man who had raised his daughter to take over the family business before his death in modern times. These similarities are important, because they create the possibility that Ulysses' life story is in line with the source material. In which case, many of the adventures and team-ups he experienced may have occurred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. How Ulysses Bloodstone Could Launch More MCU Horror Stories Despite being an obscure Marvel superhero who died less than two years after his comic debut, Ulysses Bloodstone provided the foundation for multiple storylines, with one of the biggest being Captain America's "The Bloodstone Hunt," which saw Steve Rogers and Baron Zemo engage in a race to find the fragments of the Bloodstone. Other stories used Ulysses' history as a monster hunter to connect him with other ancient threats. The MCU could do the same with its Ulysses Bloodstone. An anthology-style show could visit multiple periods in the MCU's history, with each episode taking Ulysses Bloodstone into the various corners of the world, fighting a different Marvel monster. Similar to how he was used in the comics, Ulysses' historical exploits could be used to flesh out unexplored eras in the MCU's history. This could set up new monsters for the MCU's heroes to fight in the present, while also delivering some frights along the way. A movie set in the supernatural corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could hinge on one of the many secrets Ulysses Bloodstone stumbled upon during his illustrious career as a monster hunter. Ulysses Bloodstone's story could be cleverly juxtaposed with another character, whether its Elsa Bloodstone or someone else entirely. A loose end from his past, such as a monster he hunted but never killed, could become the basis of flashbacks in a future MCU movie focused on the return of that threat. That could have been the ideal setup for a Midnight Sons crossover movie.
