3 Years Ago, This X-Man Showed Everyone Why They’re More Dangerous Than Wolverine

Published Nov 3, 2026, 7:10 PM EST Mark has been a comic book journalist for over 15 years and has interviewed comic book creators like Gail Simone and Caspar Wijngaard. And when he's not writing, he's working on beating his record of 1,200 comics read in a year. Wolverine is the best there is at what he does, and what he does isn’t very nice. This has been proven time and again throughout his 50+ years of being one of the X-Men’s bravest and Marvel Comics’ most dangerous. He’s not just a wild animal who swings his claws. Logan is a samurai who’s mastered many forms of armed and unarmed combat. However, there was one time when his former sidekick and mentee was more terrifying than him. The Hellfire Massacre During Krakoa’s final Hellfire Gala, Orchis made their big play to rid the world of mutants. They started by killing the newly voted X-Men team consisting of Juggernaut, Dazzler, Synch, Talon, Cannonball, Prodigy, Frenzy, and Jubilee. The fight continued until Charles Xavier told all of the X-Men to stand down and almost walked them and other mutants to their death. Luckily, there was the Red Triangle Protocol. The Red Triangle Protocol protected the X-Men from major psychic attacks like this. Eventually, they all resisted, and one of the mutant teleporters transported a group of heroes off of Krakoa. Once they arrived, Kitty Pryde (going by Kate back then) leaned on Krakoan gates and fell through. This was shocking because those doors were unavailable to her. What happened next would leave a lasting effect on fans of Kitty Pryde. Kate Pryde Shows Her Ruthless Side Kate Pryde didn't end up in Krakoa. She landed on a roof surrounded by Orchis goons. Normally, this would be the moment when the hero is in trouble. Instead, Kate gave Orchis a warning. She told them to surrender, and they’d be treated better than Orchis treated mutants. Kate also said this was their only chance. The field leader asked his men if they wanted to surrender, and they laughed. One of them said Kate was a high-value target because she was trained by Xavier. He then had the audacity to say she would die begging. Kate gave a cold response, saying, “You’re worried about the wrong teacher. When you go to Hell, tell Ogun I said hello.” For those who don’t know, Ogun is one of the most skilled warriors to ever live, and he taught Wolverine and inhabited Kate’s body. So, yes, this idiot Orchis agent was worried about the wrong teacher. With the skills she learned from him, Kate massacred each Orchis soldier without taking a hit. Kate Becomes Shadowkat It wasn't shocking that Kate Pryde won the fight. She has always been capable of violence. What was truly terrifying was that she killed them all. Normally, she's against murder. Nevertheless, she felt it had to be done. After it was over, she dropped to her knees and cried. She understood what she did and knew that a part of her had died with them. After this, she dressed like Ogun, brandished two swords, and had a different outlook on what needed to be done. This was the most dire the situation for mutants had been, so adjustments had to be made. She couldn’t have the positive outlook on life that she had when she was leading the Marauders. Shadowkat needed to be coldhearted and precise and do the one thing that needed to be done. After the X-Men saved the world, Charles Xavier needed to die. Eventually, Kate realized the road she was going down wasn’t a good one. So, instead of doing something she couldn’t take back, she set boundaries. She told Logan that, if they survived, she would be done with the X-Men. Luckily for everyone, not only did the X-Men save the day, but Kate also returned to her normal, happy self. Nevertheless, never forget that if the X-Men's Kate Pryde is pushed too far, not even Wolverine can stop Shadowkat.
