A 2006 PlayStation 2 Classic Is Officially Free With PS Plus Right Now

As of last Tuesday, you can play a beloved PlayStation 2 classic, originally released in 2006, entirely for free with your PlayStation Plus membership, and given the quality of the game, you may want to install it right now. Even though Sony’s subscription service is constantly getting new games, including day-one releases, older games are also joining the catalog for select members. Recently, for example, the original Resident Evil 2 joined PS Plus, allowing members of the Premium tier to enjoy the original PlayStation 1 masterpiece for free. There are many examples of classics joining the subscription service, and this movement isn’t stopping any time soon. In fact, a new post on Push Square highlights that a classic action RPG released for the PlayStation 2 back in 2006 has just joined the PS Plus catalog. As is the case with the majority of the classics, only members of the Premium tier have access to it, meaning that an Essential or Extra tier membership won’t let you play it for free. The game in question is Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. Capcom’s classic RPG joined the catalog for Premium members on August 18, as part of the new additions to PS Plus in August. This is one of the 10 new games being added to the service during the second half of the month. Other titles included in the update to PlayStation Plus are Helldivers 2, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Vampire Survivors, and Hell is Us. The beloved PS2 classic on PS Plus is not the best entry in the Onimusha series, but it is a fantastic game. In the sixth installment in the franchise, you control Soki, a warrior who wields Oni powers. His job is to deter Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who has used an army of demons to unify and control Japan. Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams has some of the best gameplay options in the series, with a larger variety of weapons and abilities than all of its predecessors, which are considered better than it by fans. A fun fact is that Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams is the last true core entry in the series since 2006, as Warlords (2018) and Samurai’s Destiny (2025) are remasters. Of course, the new Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to be released in early September, inaugurating a new era for the franchise. However, if you want to see where the series stopped, Dawn of Dreams is worth playing through. Alongside Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire on PS Plus, Dawn of Dreams is the second classic game to join the catalog during this portion of August. If you’re looking for a classic action RPG with heavy PlayStation 2 vibes, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams is the way to go. It offers fast-paced action with a ton of options and that early 00’s charm that’s hard to replicate nowadays. The best part of it is that it’s free for Premium members of PlayStation Plus, so be sure not to skip it.
