6 Years Later, Netflix's 8-Part Thriller Is Still The Best Harlan Coben Show

There is no shortage of Harlan Coben adaptations on Netflix, but only one of these shows could truly be called the best screen distillation of the writer’s unique appeal. Even though Harlan Coben became a bestselling author back in 1990, it took some 16 years for his work to make it to the big screen. The first movie adaptation of a Coben book, director Guillame Canet’s French thriller Tell No One, was a moderate hit with critics, but not successful enough to spawn a string of follow-up movies. Instead, it was 2015’s French series No Second Chance that finally brought Coben’s books to the screen in a format that fit the writer’s unique whodunit style best. Unlike traditional Agatha Christie-style murder mysteries, Coben’s fast-paced psychological thriller novels often play with time, perspective, flashbacks, and anachronic storytelling to wrong foot the reader. The author’s unique style is like a hyper-commercial blend of Christie and Christopher Nolan, and this has unsurprisingly turned him into a staple of the bestseller list. However, even though Netflix has produced some 14 shows based on Coben’s books, and Prime Video has released one amid that onslaught of titles from its competitor, only one of these shows has truly captured the appeal of the author’s writing on the small screen. 2020’s The Stranger holds onto the more outlandish and outrageous plot elements of Coben’s source novel of the same name, but the twisty mystery still manages to not just entertain, but successfully mislead and thrill viewers throughout its gripping eight-episode run. Netflix’s Adaptation Of The Stranger Is Peak Harlan Coben At the start of The Stranger's story, the eponymous stranger played by the star of the underrated SyFy space opera Killjoys, Hannah John-Kamen, approaches Richard Armitage’s seemingly normal suburban dad, Adam Prince, and tells him something that upends not only his life, but the lives of everyone around him. The show bounces back and forth between Prince's story and Siobhan Finneran’s Detective Sergeant Johanna Griffin, the cop trying to work out the eponymous stranger’s identity and their link to Adam. With a supporting cast that includes Lily Loveless, Kadiff Kirwan, Shaun Dooley, Stephen Rea, and British comedy institutions Paul Kaye and Jennifer Saunders in rare dramatic roles, The Stranger is a sharp, inventive thriller where nothing is quite as it seems. Everyone has a secret to hide in the show’s paranoid small-town setting, so the question of what the stranger said to Adam soon opens the door up to a dozen other interconnected mysteries. While 2020’s Harlan Coben Netflix series The Woods remains underrated among his adaptations, there is a reason that The Stranger has one of the author’s best Rotten Tomatoes critical ratings yet. Boasting a killer cast, a clever central conceit, and a storyline that comes together with a satisfying conclusion, The Stranger avoids all the major missteps that can stymie the potential of a great thriller miniseries. It is easy to see how Coben's struggle to capture the author’s page appeal, since the soap operatics of his novels can feel sillier and less plausible when translated to the truncated runtime of a miniseries. While the twist itself worked, the storyline reduced a sprawling soap opera to a straightforward whodunit, leaving Twin Peaks with nowhere to go after this reveal. Similarly, outside of Netflix’s triumphant The Stranger, too many Harlan Coben shows streamline too much and miss out on the campy soap opera complexity that makes his books thrilling.
