This time, this foe isn’t just out to kill the King of the Monsters; he’s prepared to destroy the entire world if that’s what it takes to finally bring Godzilla down once and for all. First appearing in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), Destoroyah quickly became one of the most iconic and deadliest Godzilla foes of all time, with a legacy that fans still reference today. Destoroyah was notably the final major enemy Godzilla fought before the kaiju’s death at the end of the Heisei era, while also representing a living consequence of the weapon that defined the Godzilla saga: the Oxygen Destroyer. As a quick refresher, in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, scientists discover that microscopic Precambrian organisms survived in the area where the Oxygen Destroyer was detonated in 1954. Decades of exposure to the weapon’s effects caused these organisms to mutate and evolve into a colony of increasingly dangerous creatures that eventually merged to become Destoroyah. Since the Oxygen Destroyer was the weapon that killed the original Godzilla in the 1954 film, and Destoroyah ultimately evolved from organisms mutated by its effects, the kaiju’s connection to the franchise’s origins makes Destoroyah's legacy all the more impactful within the overall Godzilla universe. Furthermore, Destoroyah solidified his legacy in the eyes of fans through his final battle with Godzilla in the 1995 film. Now, 31 years after his initial debut and death, Destoroyah is returning to the franchise, this time with a new look. Those who have been keeping up with the Godzilla solicitations will remember that the synopsis for Godzilla #14, which is set to release November 4, 2026, teased Destoroyah’s impending return: “Meanwhile... Lament and Onishi grow closer and closer to their goal... Destoroyah.” Now, Godzilla #15 confirms this return in its official synopsis and cover art for the December issue. The summary for the issue reveals: Destoroyah is here. After lurking in the shadows for years, the ultimate kaiju killer has finally come online. Assembled by Lament and the darkest part of G-Force, it was deemed too dangerous and cast aside for years... but Jacen and Energy Godzilla have left them with no choice. Destoroyah will bring about Godzilla's doom... even if it takes the rest of the world with it. This change in color is likely for the same reason that Godzilla’s heat ray is green in this series: the mysterious energy source known as Kai-Sei, which defines IDW Publishing's Kai-Sei Era comic line. Kai-Sei is specifically green, which is why this version of Godzilla has the distinctive glowing green veins and energy effects, including his green atomic breath. IDW editor Jake Williams has explicitly explained that Kai-Sei is the reason Godzilla’s heat ray is green. As such, the IDW Publishing-created Kai-Sei energy and its green coloring are what set the comic publisher's work apart, both narratively and visually, from other variations of the kaiju's legacy.
