For this week’s award-winning movie list, there’s a disaster movie, an animated adventure for a family streaming day, and a South Korean drama that’s my top pick. All three movies have received recognition from major awards organizations and will be streaming on Netflix U.S. this weekend. Here’s everything you need to know about the movies and what they add to your watch list. 3 The Day After Tomorrow What awaits us at the end of the tunnel? With Independence Day and 2012 among his directing credits, Roland Emmerich is a name you've likely heard of if you are a fan of disaster movies. One of his best releases, The Day After Tomorrow, sees Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal in a father-son story as extreme weather brings the Northern Hemisphere to a standstill. Quaid plays Jack Hall, a paleoclimatologist whose research points to an approaching climate catastrophe. When the changes arrive much sooner than expected, his son, Sam (Gyllenhaal), is stranded in New York with his friends. Jack sets out to reach him as the weather worsens, while Sam and the people around him take shelter and try to survive the rapidly falling temperatures. The film follows both groups in parallel, with Jack relying on his knowledge of the conditions and Sam having to act on his father’s advice from a distance. The movie won the BAFTA Award for Special Visual Effects. Give this one a shot if you want a disaster movie with beautiful (albeit dystopian) visuals, anticipation, and a nice, fast pace that'll keep you hooked. The Day After Tomorrow Release Date May 28, 2004 Cast Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum, Dash Mihok, Jay O. Sanders, Sela Ward, Austin Nichols, Arjay Smith, Tamlyn Tomita, Sasha Roiz, Ian Holm, Nassim Sharara, Carl Alacchi, Kenneth Welsh, Michel Gish Abou-Samah, Robin Wilcock, Jason Blicker, Kenneth Moskow, Tim Hamaguchi, Glenn Plummer, Adrian Lester, Richard McMillan, Nestor Serrano, Sylvain Landry, Chris Britton Runtime 124 Minutes Director Roland Emmerich Writers Roland Emmerich, Jeffrey Nachmanoff Main Genre Thriller Budget $125million Studio(s) 20th Century Distributor(s) 20th Century 2 The Croods An old family with some very familiar problems Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds lead the voice cast of The Croods, a DreamWorks adventure with a lot to offer in terms of story and animation. It’s the family pick on this week’s list, a story that revolves around a father and daughter who have opposing ideas about what keeps them safe. Grug (Cage) has kept his family alive by teaching them to fear unfamiliar things and stay close to their cave. His daughter, Eep (Stone), wants to explore, particularly after meeting Guy (Reynolds), a young man whose inventions offer a new way of surviving. When the family’s cave is destroyed, they have to travel through a strange landscape together. Grug finds himself struggling to remain in charge as the others become interested in Guy’s intriguing ideas. The Croods won three Annie Awards, recognizing its animated effects, character animation, and character design. It isn't the most show-stopping animated movie I've watched, of course, but it's an entertaining one regardless. At a runtime of approximately 90 minutes, it’s also a good choice if you’re fitting a cozy family movie into a busy weekend. The Croods Release Date March 22, 2013 Cast Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman, Clark Duke, Chris Sanders, Randy Thom Runtime 99 minutes Director Chris Sanders, Kirk DeMicco Writers Chris Sanders, Kirk DeMicco Producers Jane Hartwell, Kristine Belson Sequel(s) The Croods: A New Age Main Genre Animation Budget $65 million Studio(s) 20th Century Distributor(s) 20th Century, Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Distribution Executive Producer(s) Jeffrey Katzenberg 1 Poetry Finding the words as they start slipping away With a new Lee Chang-dong film arriving on Netflix this week, you may want to make time for one of his best films, Poetry, my top pick for the weekend. The South Korean drama stars Yoon Jeong-hee as Mi-ja, a grandmother raising her teenage grandson while her daughter works in another city. Mi-ja has started forgetting everyday words and soon learns that she has Alzheimer’s disease. Around the same time, she joins a poetry class at a local cultural center. Writing her first poem proves harder than she expected, so she starts looking more closely at her surroundings for inspiration. But then she discovers something shocking about her grandson, leaving her in a precarious position since she is responsible for him. The drama unfolds while she’s trying to understand her diagnosis and finish a poem that matters to her, so the plot is emotionally heavy. This movie also sees Yoon Jeong-hee in her first feature film appearance since 1994 (and the last before she died in 2023), and she delivers a stunning performance. Lee won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes in 2010 (and for good reason). Some other accolades include the Grand Bell Awards for Best Picture and Best Actress, the Blue Dragon Film Awards for Best Actress, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress for Yoon. You can follow Poetry with Possible Love, Lee’s first feature in eight years, following 2018’s Burning. It starts streaming globally on Netflix on November 6 and follows two married couples who become involved in each other’s lives through a documentary about laid-off workers. Shape your Netflix recommendations If you enjoy what you watch, take a moment to rate it on Netflix. Use a thumbs-up for a movie you liked or a double thumbs-up for one you loved. These ratings help shape your recommendations, so you can give ratings when you discover a film outside your usual genres and want more suggestions along those lines.
