Sign in to your ScreenRant account 2026 is the first time in years we've seen the world of movies hit one major box office milestone, making this point in time even more important from a film perspective. While some of 2026's biggest movie releases still have yet to come - with Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three being set up to debut at the end of the year - the eight months we've currently had of the year have had no shortage of quality films release in them, nor have they fallen short when it comes to box office hits. Indeed, ever since April 2026, we've seen a notable number of films make it to the biggest milestones possible in theatrical history, with a range of films making $1 billion or more in terms of their worldwide box office, which is a financial feat only films that have grasped audience attention or the cultural consciousness in some major way can obtain. 2026's current $1B+ movie roster is doubly noteworthy as a lineup that has broken one major record that we haven't seen any other year do for quite some time, setting 2026 up to seem like an even more crucial chapter in the world of cinema, and establishing a sense of progression that bodes seriously well for future years that are on the horizon and their own box office bounties. 2026 Is The First Year Since 2019 That 5 Movies Or More Have Made $1B+ At The Box Office Credit: Sony Pictures Releasing Following Spider-Man: Brand New Day hitting the $1 billion milestone days into its theatrical run before reaching its current $2 billion box office takings, 2026 officially gained five movies that have earned $1 billion at the box office over the year thus far, with Brand New Day, The Odyessy, Toy Story 5, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie all hitting this major milestone. This is impressive by itself without analyzing these results further, but becomes all the more noteworthy when it's taken into account that this is the first time since the pre-pandemic era that five films or more have each gained $1 billion. Indeed, the last time this happened beforehand was now 7 years ago in 2019. The year had a staggering nine movies that released in this timespan and made $1 billion or more at the box office, since 2019's release roster included Avengers: Endgame, the live-action The Lion King, Frozen II, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Captain Marvel, Joker, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, Toy Story 4, and the live-action adaptation of Aladdin. Why 2026 Is The First Year To Break This Box Office Record While the lower number of $1B+ box office results following the COVID-19 outbreak does appear to be for more factors than the event itself, this did of course play a crucial role in the theatrical results we've seen effectively ever since. This is both because theaters had to close during lockdowns and people were more cautious to be in this kind of enclosed space together even when they weren't, and because it disrupted production processes and release orders that came alongside this too. The latter concept has carried through into today, as a result of inflation and the cost of living combining with the popularity of streaming to encourage audiences to only go to see movies they're thoroughly excited by. This isn't to say there were no theatrical success stories up until now, of course, as each year from 2021 onwards has had at least one or two $1 billion movies. Indeed, 2025 paved the way for 2026's biggest $1B+ roster, with its own quadruple hits of Ne Zha 2 - which made over $2 billion - Zootopia 2, and Avatar: Fire and Ash showing that 2026's own results were more than possible in the current movie landscape so long as there was the right movie combo.
