Mickey Haller’s Introduction Added Depth To Harry Bosch’s Backstory Harry Bosch already had quite a bit of family backstory in the books by the time Mickey Haller was introduced in 2005’s The Lincoln Lawyer. He was the child of a sex worker who was murdered when he was 11 years old, so he spent most of his life in orphanages and the foster care system. He didn’t have a relationship with his father. Their dad's terribleness is probably the first thing that brings them together instead of keeping them apart. Luckily, this emotional barrier breaks down the longer they work together. The two slowly but surely grow closer as they cross over, developing a loyal and respectful relationship that can be prickly yet largely caring. They sometimes go to dinner together. Their families come together, and their children Maddie and Hayley become close friends after they meet in The Reversal. Even when Mickey and Harry connect on a familial level, they each still stand firm on their beliefs about the law. They acknowledge their opposing professional views but find common ground wherever possible. This leads to great team-ups in which Harry serves as an investigator on Mickey’s cases. Harry’s willing to help Mickey on cases with the caveat that Mickey will follow the rules of discovery and share evidence that proves his client guilty. Meanwhile, Mickey continues to take on clients without concern about their guilt, at least until the most recent books. The Lincoln Lawyer Books Are A Great Counterbalance To The Bosch Books The Lincoln Lawyer and Bosch are great counterbalances because of their contrasting traits. They are both praised for their legal realism. However, Bosch provides the gritty investigative work, while The Lincoln Lawyer has theatrical courtroom drama. Both Harry and Mickey are willing to bend the rules and go into a gray area. However, Harry Bosch does this to find justice, while Mickey Haller does this to get his clients off. Bosch and The Lincoln Lawyer exist on opposite sides of the law, but they share a similar cynicism towards the system. By writing these books in different ways, Michael Connelly adds variety for readers. When you’re looking for a slow-burn, gritty story with a lone wolf main character, you can pick up a Bosch book. If you’re looking for a faster-paced story with a charismatic, funny main character, you can pick up a book in The Lincoln Lawyer series. Ultimately, Harry Bosch and the Bosch Universe are better with Mickey Haller around, and their shared stories will hopefully continue for quite some time.
