Sign in to your ScreenRant account It takes true strength to endure or overcome insurmountable loss and lifelong hardship, to paraphrase and add to the wise words of everyone's favorite Toad Sage from Naruto. Its titular character has had to shoulder trauma since the moments of his birth and beyond, with the loss of his parents, being ostracized by the Village Hidden in the Leaves, and carrying an enormous burden as Kurama's Jinchuriki. Naruto Uzumaki had every right to resent his home and even his family, at some points occasionally doing so. But one of the most striking instances of that was learning more about his past, and being able not just to accept it, but actively embrace it. Naruto's journey as a young shinobi growing up amid Akatsuki plots and the rides of war had multiple inflection points where he could have given into darker impulses. This included nearly unleashing a hateful, unhinged Kurama upon Pain and the world once again, and even a more overt instance where Naruto literally had to defeat his shadow self. But perhaps the biggest immediate signifier of his growth, during his task of taming the Nine-Tailed Beast, was when he met his mother, getting to have a very different first meeting than even when he met his father at a highly similar, crucial moment. It's here that Naruto would learn the story of how his parents met, his birth, and their ultimate sacrifice to save both their son and the entire village. It might be a simple quote, but this moment in both the Naruto anime and manga said more about his personal growth than virtually any other. Naruto's Greatest Line Came During His Special Mission To Tame The Nine-Tails Naruto Uzumaki, being sent on a "special mission" with the hidden benefit of keeping him away from the Akatsuki, and tame the Tailed Beast inside him whose name he'd still yet to learn, already had plenty of troubling moving parts in his life. He's been living a long time as a target of enemy forces, only after the Nine-Tailed Beast living inside him, perfectly content with the extraction resulting in the boy's death. After no small amounts of struggle, though, this arc produces a remarkably moving first meeting with Naruto's mother, Kushina Uzumaki, whose story prompted Naruto to say eight simple words: I'm glad I'm your son, Mom and Dad! Originally appearing in Naruto chapter 504 before the infinitely more bittersweet farewell as shown in its 2012 adaptation, Naruto: Shippuden episode 249, this fully shows a permanent, noticeable boost in Naruto's resolve. Despite being left to fend for himself and having every reason to resent his family for leaving him without parents, Naruto learned the lives Minato and Kushina lived and ultimately gave up, to keep the future of Konoha alive. The rest of the full line entails Naruto laying out the heartbreaking reality of growing up not knowing what parental love felt like, and that their love overpowers even the vast chakra of the Nine Tailed Fox living in his body. As if that weren't enough, Naruto's earlier primary obstacle to taming the Nine-Tails and harnessing his powers was the manifestation of his dark emotions, festering his entire life as an ostracized orphan resented by his village. His already-impressive victory came with accepting this part of himself, but as he moves to tame the spirit dwelling inside him, this final exchange with Kushina is the true highest peak of Naruto's emotional arc yet. It's one thing to overcome a symbolic trial; it's another to put it to practical use, healing a lifelong mental wound in the process. It's a moment standing as a stark contrast with Naruto's first meeting with Minato, similarly as chakra remnants buried within his psyche. Instead of hitting Kushina like he did Minato, the boy found his mother, and couldn't help but hold her tight and be grateful to meet her. It's one of the most pure, wholesome expressions of affection, all too affirming of Minato and Kushina's decision, and acts as a window into Naruto's healing soul as a direct case for him as an all-time shonen anime protagonist. Why Naruto's Line Is The Greatest In Shonen Anime History Admittedly, the Naruto franchise faces stiff competition among the shonen anime greats. Final goodbyes to or from parents tend to pack a whallop for audiences as an innately relatable experience. It also doesn't get old, either; even a thousand chapters into One Piece, and it's easy to be devastated by something as simple as wishing a "Happy 10th Birthday" from Kuma to Bonney. It's almost unfair, with plenty of anime having their fair share of unearned attempts at gravitas like this. But Naruto's moment, rather than heartbreaking, is emotionally overpowering due to the sheer emotional payoff. Kushina, from beyond the grave, got to see her son grown up, demonstrating resilience for surviving his difficult childhood; forgiveness toward his parents who made an incredibly difficult choice; and wisdom to accept his life, recognize what he'd attained, and be grateful his parents gave him a chance to do it. Rather than obsessing over Asta's catchphrases, hype moments with Vegeta, or the shifting complexities of Eren Yeager, Naruto's best quotes have typically come from the heart, resonating strongly with its audiences.
