Toxic ending explained: The Raya-Ticket twist that changes everything you watched

Yash, during his appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, said that people would go, "What the hell was that?", after watching director Geetu Mohandas's Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups. And that's precisely how everyone felt after watching the climax with that mind-boggling twist.Director Geetu Mohandas' Yash-starrer moves between decades, locations and realities, gradually putting together the story of Raya (Yash), his sister Ganga (Nayanthara), the women in his life and the criminal empire he builds around them.But beneath the opium trade, gang wars and larger-than-life spectacle is a deeply personal story about childhood trauma and the consequences of violence. And the film saves its biggest reveal for the relationship between Raya and Ticket (Yash in another role) — a twist that completely changes the way you look at everything that came before it.Spoiler alert. Raya, Ganga and the Goan empireToxic follows Raya and his sister Ganga (Nayanthara), who grow up in difficult circumstances and eventually set their sights on controlling the illegal trade in Portuguese-controlled Goa. Ganga is determined to see her brother at the top, no matter what it takes. When marrying Rebecca (Tara Sutaria), the daughter of powerful gangster Salvador (Darrell D'Silva), could help Raya achieve that, she pushes him towards it.But Raya falls for Nadia (Kiara Advani), and his relationship with her changes the course of his life. Raya and Nadia have a son, Ticket, who eventually grows up away from his father. Meanwhile, Raya builds his empire, kills Salvador at his stalled wedding to Rebecca and later has another son, Adam, with Mellisa (Rukmini Vasanth). The more powerful Raya becomes, the more complicated his family gets. Ticket comes back to haunt his fatherTicket, who also narrates the story, returns to Raya's life as an adult. At first, it appears that he has come back to settle scores with the father who didn't save him as a child. Raya, meanwhile, sees Ticket as a threat to everything he has built.As Raya expands his criminal empire from Goa to Macau, Ticket repeatedly gets in his way. The conflict reaches a dangerous point when Ticket kidnaps Adam and attempts to kill him in the same way Raya once tried to kill him. But things didn't go according to plan.Despite all his anger towards Raya, Ticket doesn't kill his father when he gets the chance. He even saves him from an attack. It is here that the film starts dropping hints that there is more to Ticket than meets the eye.The twist that nobody saw comingThe climax changes everything. Ticket, who has been narrating the film all along, turns out to be a figment of Raya's imagination. The real Ticket died years ago.Raya had tried to kill his son and, when he eventually changed his mind, it was already too late. He couldn't save Ticket. Raya's mind, unable to deal with the guilt and trauma, created a version of Ticket who survived. In short, he has been hallucinating all along.Which means the Ticket we have been following isn't a man who returned to destroy his father's empire. He is a part of Raya's imagination. And that makes the film's unreliable narration even more interesting. If Ticket has been telling us the story from inside Raya's fractured mind, how much of what we have seen can actually be trusted? Raya's mind is destroying everythingThe revelation also explains why Raya's life appears to be falling apart. Ganga and Nadia are dead, and Raya has already lost much of what mattered to him. His obsession with Ticket and his increasingly erratic behaviour suggest that his grip on reality is weakening.The people around him seem to notice it too. Mellisa tries to leave with her son Adam at one point, only for 'Ticket' to kidnap the child. Karmadi (Sudev Nair), one of Raya's gang members, also appears to understand that something is seriously wrong with him.In a way, Raya's biggest enemy isn't another gangster at all. It is the part of himself that he cannot escape. So, what really happened to Ticket?Raya killed Ticket when he was a child. Everything that follows is shaped by his inability to accept that loss. The adult Ticket is essentially Raya's guilt, taking a form he can interact with. He becomes the son Raya can argue with, fight with, blame and even try to destroy — because accepting the truth about the real Ticket is far more painful.That also explains the strange contradictions in Ticket's behaviour. He claims to hate Raya and wants revenge, but repeatedly stops short of killing him. He even saves him. Because, ultimately, Ticket isn't really trying to kill Raya. He is Raya's own mind, forcing him to confront what he did. And then comes the avalanche.By the end, Raya finally becomes aware of what has been happening. Rather than fighting it, he seems to surrender to the chaos in his head.The film then gives us one of its strangest and most haunting images. An avalanche races towards Raya as he finally embraces Ticket — the son he spent years trying to keep at a distance. And then, the screen cuts to black. The film doesn't tell us definitively whether Raya survives.What does the ending of Toxic mean?On the most straightforward level, Toxic ends with Raya finally accepting the part of himself he has spent years rejecting. Earlier in the film, Raya says that he has lost his sense of self-preservation after losing everything he loved. His final actions seem to reflect exactly that.He no longer runs from Ticket. He no longer tries to fight him. He embraces him. There is also a larger meaning to the twist. Raya grew up surrounded by violence and spent his adult life building an empire through it. Eventually, that same violence destroys his family and turns him inward.The 'Ticket' inside his head is essentially the consequence of everything Raya has done.Can we trust anything we saw? This is where the ending gets particularly interesting. Since Ticket is the narrator for much of Toxic and is eventually revealed to be part of Raya's fractured psyche, the film leaves room to question the events we have watched. Some of it could be reality as Raya remembers it. Some of it could be distorted by his guilt. And some of it may exist entirely inside his mind.The ending doesn't give us a neat answer.Instead, Toxic leaves us with a broken man finally confronting the consequences of his own actions. Raya spent his life trying to become powerful enough to control everyone and everything around him.
