13 best women's pyjamas, reviewed for comfort and style

I’ve tried on everything from classic stripe sets to vintage-inspired nighties Abby Driver/The StandardI love spring and summer best, and the only way I will be cajoled merrily (ish) into autumn is with the promise of a new irresistibly cosy pyjama set. Childish? Perhaps. Effective? 100 per cent. And I’m not alone in my obsession with pyjamas. According to recent research from nightwear brand Chelsea Peers, 43 per cent of people surveyed said wearing super-soft and cosy pyjamas is important to getting a good night's sleep. If your loungewear drawer could do with a refresh in the name of a good night, you’re in luck. I’ve tried on everything from high-end luxury brands to supermarket bargains and everything in between to help you find the right set (or two) this winter. How I tested Abby Driver/The StandardDuring my testing, I’ve found something for everyone: from traditional button-up shirts and bottoms to sweet cardigan sets and the prettiest nightgown in the world. And I’ve put everything to the test, with many a hard night spent lounging away in the name of finding the very best pyjama set available in 2026. So whether you’re after some brushed cotton beauties or a pair of pyjamas that won’t break the bank ahead of Christmas, we’ve got you. Seasalt Song Bird GOTS Organic Cotton PyjamasAbby Driver/The Standard★★★★★Best: Overall women’s pyjamas What we love: 100 per cent organic cotton, intricate print, huge size rangeTake note: Not the cheapest If I could design my perfect pair of pyjamas, it would be these beauties from Seasalt. They are just impossible to beat. They're made from 100 per cent organic cotton, come in a range of intricate, beautiful designs, and the fit is perfection. These sets are generously sized, so if you’re between sizes, or prefer a snugger fit, I’d suggest sizing down. The size range itself is hugely impressive; 8 through to a size 26/28. Plus, the drawcord waist does help get a bespoke fit. And while I’m a sucker for traditional pyjama sets like these, I appreciate not everyone wants to wear a button-up to bed. In which case. I also reviewed the Dream Flare Sleeve Pyjamas, a much less formal style with a sweet print and irresistible subtle flared sleeve. And if you run hot, the Wood Sage Organic Cotton Seersucker Pyjamas with organic cotton seersucker, relaxed fit and grandad collar would be perfect; just switch out the top for a vest when you get into bed. Size range: 8 - 26/28Colour ways: Folky Woodland Loch (teal) and Leaf Press Flag (red)Material: 100 % organic cotton M&S Soft Touch Printed Revere Pyjama SetAbby Driver/The Standard/M&S★★★★☆Best: Budget women’s pyjamas What we love: Bargain price tag, super comfortable, and traditional striped design Take note: Not super breathable Super soft to the touch, with a great range of sizes from extra small to extra large, these stripy pyjamas from M&S offer exceptional value. They’ve got oodles of stretch, so are comfy to loaf about in while the reverse collar and button-through fastenings are a stylish touch. I love this simple ivory stripe design, but the same pyjamas are available with a brown leopard print, subtle holly design and cute festive dog set too. They are made of polyester, though, which is never my first choice for sleeping in. If you’d prefer cotton, and even more of a bargain, I’m also eyeing up this 100 per cent cotton £12.50 set. Size range: XS - XXLColour ways: Ivory stripe, leopard print, holly, festive dogs Material: 93% polyester, 7% elastane TBCO Ankle Grazer Cotton Pyjama Set in Red RuffleAbby Driver/The Standard/TBCO ★★★★★Best: Stylish pyjamasWhat we love: Playful design, 100 per cent cotton, and matching scrunchie Take note: Run long in the legs Who says pyjamas have to be boring? Not the designers at TBCo, that's for sure. There's whimsy in every pair, but I especially adore this sweet little red ruffle set. The ruffle hem trousers are ankle grazers, but on my frame they hit as full length (which I'm not mad about). The tie front top feels very of the moment, while the ruffle cuffs are just unapologetically playful. I also tried on a pair of the brand's classic striped full-length pyjamas, which were gorgeous, but too long in the leg for me.Size range: XS - 3XL Colour ways: Red or whiteMaterial: 100% cotton Toast Gingham double face cotton pyjamasAbby Driver/The Standard/Toast★★★★★Best: Traditional pyjamasWhat we love: Contrast hems and cuffs, internal hanging loop, and super soft organic cotton Take note: Bit of a splurgeWith trademark Toast quality, these soft double-faced organic pyjamas feel immediately comfortable. Almost lived in, in all the right ways. There’s nothing starchy or scratchy here. The double print is a stunning touch, and when rolled up to a cuff as shown in my picture, they fit me perfectly. Taller ladies could simply unroll, and they'd fit like a dream too. Though it does mean you may lose the contrast detail, which for me at least is part of the charm of this pair. Contrast details aside, I am also very here for the two deeply roomy pockets on the drawstring trousers, and the little chest pocket. Everything about these pyjamas screams quality; from the thickness of the herringbone-patterned drawstring tie, to the Corozo buttons on the top and the well-thought-through hanging loop. However you slice it, £135 is a steep investment for a pair of pyjamas. Nonetheless, if you feel like a well-earned splurge, this pair has the quality to justify the price tag. Size range: XS - XL Colour ways: Coral with skyblue Material: 100% organic cotton Desmond and Dempsey Long sleeve light and easy nightieAbby Driver/The Standard/Desmond and Dempsey★★★★☆Best: Nightie What we love: Romantic silhouette, super soft cotton voile, and ruffled hems Take note: Quite see-through I'm utterly obsessed with this nightgown. No, I'm sorry, I can't attend that work meeting in person/parents' evening / your bake sale... I can't seem to get out of my nightie. This nightie is somehow both preposterously proper, yet a little daring to wear. And I'm here for all of it. The full-length lace-trimmed hem, the sweetest ruffle-cuffed wrists and the lightest cotton voile that is just a teeny bit see-through (you'll definitely want nude underwear on under this if your postie knocks). It’s just perfect. The oversized fit is super generous, yet somehow feels just right for wafting around the halls of my Victorian house, pretending I'm a character in a Brontë novel.Size range: XS - XL Colour ways: CreamMaterial: Cotton Voile 50 GSMPiglet in Bed Posy Bud Pointelle Abby Driver/The Standard/Piglet in Bed★★★★☆Best: Cardigan setWhat we love: Super sweet florals, organic cotton, and lettuce hem Take note: Not fully opaque Crafted out of 100 per cent organic cotton in a delicate pointelle knit, dotted with a delicate floral print and finished with lettuce hem detailing. I mean, I was sold before I'd even tried this set on. And once I'd tried them on, well, let’s just say it was an effort to ever take them off. Ridiculously cosy, yet perfectly breathable, they are supremely comfy to wear. And for those who prefer organic, these are made from 100 per cent GOTS-certified organic cotton and are free from harmful chemicals and dyes, so you can sleep easy. Size range: Extra small to extra large Colour ways: Cream floral print Material: 100% organic cotton Fat Face Harper plum purple metallic check cuffed pyjama bottomsAbby Driver/The Standard/Fat Face ★★★★☆Best: Cuffed-bottom pyjamas What we love: Cuffed bottoms, metallic detailing, and excellent size rangeTake note: No matching top When it comes to pyjamas, I immediately feel in safe hands with FatFace. They have a reputation for well-thought-through, dependably good pyjamas that fit, wash and last well. And that's certainly true with these cuffed pyjama bottoms. They fit perfectly, with a drawstring waist to get the fit just so. And speaking of fit, these are available in a decent size range, with short, regular and long leg lengths available too. The pattern is a purple check with the subtlest thread of metallic shimmer throughout; the perfect nod to the festive season, or just a simple way to add a little sparkle to winter. Either way, these are supremely comfortable to wear, and topped with this relaxed Lila Ivory Pointelle Henley Top, I could happily stay snuggled up on the sofa with the dog from now until the clock changes back again. Size range: 6 - 18, with short, regular or long lengths availableColour ways: Plum purple metallic Material: 95% Cotton, 5% Metallised fibre. The White Company Classic Cotton Sateen Stripe Pyjama SetAbby Driver/The Standard/The White Company★★★★☆Best: Crisp cotton pyjamas What we love: Subtle satin stripe, mother-of-pearl buttons, and crisp feelTake note: Not fully opaque The pyjama equivalent of impossibly crisp and white hotel bedding, this set from The White Company feels like a very smart answer to bedtime. It's classic, generously sized and just the ticket for wandering around your house feeling a smidge more organised than you really are. (No, just me?) I wear these, and I can imagine I have already got all my Christmas presents wrapped and labelled and a Christmas pudding maturing in the larder. Alas…In terms of details, I love the neat collar, mother-of-pearl buttons and subtle satin stripe, which feels both lengthening and classic. Make sure you pair it with lighter underwear, though, as it's not fully opaque. Size range: XS - XLColour ways: WhiteMaterial: 100% cotton Chelsea Peers Bedtime Stories Print Long Pyjama Set Abby Driver/The Standard/Chelsea Peers★★★★☆Best: Pyjama set for book lovers What we love: Huge size range, quirky bookish design, and really soft Take note: Not super breathable If your dream winter evening is spent curled up with a book, I've got the perfect pair of pyjamas for you. This delightful bedtime stories design is a bookworm's dream loungewear, featuring dozens of vintage-inspired book prints. They're also perfect for lounging around with a book, thanks to the drawstring waistband, cuffed ankles and relaxed fit. And can we talk about the colour combination of cream and dusty blush pink? Dreamy! They are made of polyester, though, so while they’re super soft to wear for lounging in, I’d pick something more breathable for sleeping. Not that you’re going to put that book down anyway, are you? Size range: 6 - 28Colour ways: PinkMaterial: 95% Polyester (Recycled) 5% ElastaneTu Brown cream piping traditional pyjamasAbby Driver/The Standard/Tu★★★★☆Best: Pyjama set for hot sleepers What we love: Ridiculously soft, flattering, and moisture-wicking Take note: Size up for a comfortable fit Made of half modal and half cotton, the first thing to say about these pyjamas is that they are ridiculously soft to wear and feel like butter against the skin. They drape beautifully, but the addition of moisture-wicking modal gives these pyjamas breathability and will help sweaty sleepers stay more comfortable throughout the night. But aside from matters of a practical nature, these feel chic and classic. I love the deep chocolate hue, while the cream piping adds a subtle detail to make these feel altogether more put together. They fit well, but I’d advise sizing up if you want a relaxed, looser fit for lounging around in. And just £20 and available when you do the big shop? A very convenient bargain. Size range: XS - XXLColour ways: BrownMaterial: 50% TENCEL™ Modal, 50% CottonNext Sage green stripe balloon pyjamasAbby Driver/The Standard/Next★★★★☆Best: oversized pyjamas What we love: Balloon-leg design, super relaxed fit, and loungewear-pyjama hybridTake note: Trousers are a bit hot for sleeping If you like your loungewear baggy, you will love these balloon pyjama bottoms and oversized T-shirt combo from Next. The trousers have a beautiful drape, and the cuffed ankles mean you aren't tripping over the excess of fabric. Meanwhile, the boxy cotton T-shirt feels like the perfect finish to this oversized look. Plus, you could chuck on some trainers, a jacket and sunnies and it would just about pass as outerwear. Win win! While the trousers are a joy to wear around the house, I would probably swap them out at bedtime for something more breathable. Size range: 6 - 20Colour ways: Sage green Material: Pyjama Top 100% Cotton. Pyjama Bottom 100% Recycled polyesterBoux Avenue Gingerbread and candy cane fleece pyjamas Abby Driver/The Standard/Boux Avenue ★★★☆☆Best: Fleece pyjamas What we love: Cute as a button design, super snuggly fleece, and a paperbag waistTake note: Not good for hot sleepers If you're seeking the ultimate in festive cosiness this winter, check out these sweet pyjamas in a bag from Boux Avenue. They are outrageously soft to the touch and would keep you snug as a bug all winter long. Plus, the festive print would surely win over even a Grinch. You can get a good fit with the drawstring waist, and I love the subtle but flattering paperbag waist, and could be tempted to wear these with a plain tucked-in tank to make the most of it. There are no pockets on the bottoms, which bothers me more than it should, given I never actually use them for their function. Avoid if you run hot – fleece is cosy to wear, but often sweaty for sleeping. Size range: 6 - 18Colour ways: Pink Material: Fleece What are the best women’s pyjamas?Or save your pennies for other festive frivolities, and upgrade your pyjama drawer with the Soft Touch Printed Revere Pyjama Set from M&S. There are loads of prints to choose from, a huge size range and at just £20 a pair, they won’t break the bank. Why trust me? Once the clocks go back, and my children are in bed, you’ll find me tucked up in my own bed reading. So while I’m not saying I hibernate through the winter months, I do take it as far as a human reasonably can. Suffice to say, I spent a lot of time in pyjamas and have come to know a thing or two about the merits of brushed cotton vs cotton voile.
