The past few years have seen growth in both the capabilities and popularity of generative artificial intelligence technology, as well as the growth in AI as a means of creating and spreading misinformation online. One way AI is used to spread misinformation is mass fabricating stories and images to get clicks and engagement on social media, particularly when said AI-generated content is heartwarming or inspiring. There aren't many topics better for pulling on people's heartstrings than dogs. For example, over the past few years, Snopes has fact-checked questionable stories about a "guardian angel" dog rescuing a toddler from flooding, a military dog receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor and former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning funding a dog rescue shelter.
