HBO Max is no different, and there is a considerable amount of turnover as July changes to August. Though it's painful to see things go, it's exciting to see all the new choices hit the platform. Max is adding quite a few films in August, and many of them are absolute must-watch picks. There's very little rhyme or reason to the new additions for August, and there are films from nearly every era of movie history. Classic and hidden gems are well-represented, and a few fresh films are making their streaming debuts. This is good news for movie fans because there are guaranteed to be more than a few things to catch the eye of even the pickiest streamers. This isn't a comprehensive list, and only picks out the highlights of August's new additions. Though HBO Max's changes are relatively small compared to other streamers, there are still so many new movies that it would be impossible to watch them all. These 10 films are the best of what the streamer is offering this month, and there's no telling how long they'll stick around before vanishing. 10 Barbarian (2022) - August 1st Zach Cregger's Weapons scored an Oscar, but 2022's Barbarian is just as good and arguably scarier. A woman stays at a creepy rental property and discovers a strange secret in the basement. Horror is best when it's capable of being surprising, and Barbarian perfectly executes its shocking twists. The suspense is unbearable during the movie's first half-hour, but it manages to reinvent itself as it goes along. It has a lot to say about the disintegration of Middle America, without getting too bogged down in messaging. Though it doesn't get as much credit, HBO Max is a great place to go to see truly terrifying horror flicks. 9 Murder On The Orient Express (2017) - August 1st Kicking off Kenneth Branagh's Agatha Christie trilogy, Murder on the Orient Express is a perfect murder mystery movie. The familiar tale of death upon the legendary train is brought to life with some pretty major changes from the source material. An A-list cast adds flair, and the 2017 release is a slick and modern retelling of the well-worn story. Like Knives Out, there's a playful energy to Murder on the Orient Express that separates it from the usual stuffy procedurals. There have been countless Christie adaptations, and the blockbuster does an excellent job of making it accessible again. Though it isn't a perfect film, Murder on the Orient Express is a fun diversion with some great twists. 8 Practical Magic (1998) - August 1st We still have a ways to go until fall, but Practical Magic offers a cozy fall vibe any time of year. The plot concerns a family of witches who must come together to protect themselves from an evil spirit. With a sequel on the way later this year, the '90s classic is having a bit of a moment once again. Practical Magic 2 is set to open on September 11th, 2026. It's a highlight of both Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock's filmographies, and is one of the most beloved witch films ever made. It's the perfect movie to watch on streaming because of its abundant nostalgia, and it's the kind of film that gets better and better with each viewing. It has laughs as well as chills, and it may even elicit a few tears from particularly sentimental audience members. 4 The Wrong Man (1956) - August 1st The Wrong Man is easily Alfred Hitchcock's most underrated movie, and it is also one of his most effective thrillers. A musician is mistaken for an armed robber, but his attempts to clear his name only get him further into trouble. Henry Fonda is perfectly cast in the leading role, and he plays the sympathetic leading man perfectly. Unlike other Hitchcock films which feature complex and unrealistic plots, The Wrong Man is based on a true story. This adds to the tension since it all seems so frighteningly plausible. Though it doesn't have bombastic thrills and chills, The Wrong Man is an effective story that forces the viewer to ask themselves what they would do in such a situation. 3 Normal (2025) - August 14th Made in the style of John Wick, Normal is a wild action flick starring Bob Odenkirk. The temporary sheriff of a small town in Minnesota discovers a dark secret that puts him in the crosshairs of a powerful criminal enterprise. What starts as a simple mystery story soon balloons into one of the most ridiculous action films in recent memory. Normal manages to keep topping itself scene after scene, and each explosive and silly moment is better than the last. It doesn't take itself too seriously, so it could definitely be classified as an action comedy. The best part of the movie is its ability to surprise, and there are a few absolutely hilarious moments that come out of nowhere. Normal is an imperfect film, but it's hard to see the flaws through all the ridiculous action. 2 Mother Mary (2026) - August 21st Anne Hathaway is having quite a year, and Mother Mary is destined for success when it lands on HBO Max at the end of the month. Hathaway stars as a legendary pop star who reunites with her former costume designer, but the reunion is quite painful. Though it looks like a serious flick on the surface, it's safe to say that Mother Mary is pure camp. Hathaway is brilliant, as are supporting stars like Michaela Coel and Hunter Schafer. The A24 thriller leans heavily into its pop influences, so it's a feast for both the ears and eyes. While it certainly suffers from a lackluster script and pacing problems, Mother Mary is one of those curiosity pieces that must be seen to be believed. 1 The Cabin In The Woods (2011) - August 30th Ending the month of August on a high note, The Cabin in the Woods hits the platform on the 30th. Young adults travel to a remote cabin for a vacation, but are soon attacked by monsters. It's eventually revealed that a much larger conspiracy is afoot right below their feet. The irreverent horror comedy perfectly spoofs tropes, embracing the wild energy of the genre's best moments. The Cabin in the Woods is a love letter to classic horror, and a perfect treat for fans of the genre. It's one of the best horror films of the 2010s, and offers a perfect conclusion for a bygone era of movie history. Though it won't be on HBO Max until the end of the month, The Cabin in the Woods is well worth the wait.
