Published Oct 19, 2026, 4:41 PM EDT Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot. Resident Evil movies are a hot-button topic simply because not a single one has been a wholly faithful adaptation so far. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City features much of the iconography and characters fans of the first two Resident Evil games will recognize, but that initial visual familiarity is where its faithfulness ends. That’s why Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie is so intriguing; the movie itself is not an adaptation of any of the games’ stories, but instead adapts the experience of playing a Resident Evil game (the experience of you playing, and not the protagonist who’s experiencing these horrors, per se), and is therefore arguably the best adaptation of the games we’ve received. Ironically, the Resident Evil movie would make for a horrifying game, and one fan has taken it upon themselves to make it so. As per Instagram, user chicanogoth is ambitiously recreating Cregger’s Resident Evil movie as an unofficial, PlayStation 1-style adaptation. So, what’s been shared is stunning: a clip depicting Bryan at the snowy, remote barn, and he’s even being chased by a dog (using a model of the Resident Evil 2 zombie Doberman). The atmosphere of this clip alone is fantastic, with static camera angles and low-poly graphics reimagining one of the movie's best scenes. In another post, the user shares that they’ve also drawn from animation libraries to depict Bryan limping when he’s injured, and included unique death animations and a sound for when Bryan gets hurt by the dog. The user explains that they’re working on an opening sequence with the flipped-over police cruiser, suggesting the fan-made game would start with players taking control of Bryan. Specifically, at the point in the movie when he crawls out of the car and begins looping the woman around it, which is brilliant because that’s likely where an official Resident Evil game adaptation of this movie would start, too, with the hospital and accident scenes being introductory cutscenes. If user chicanogoth eventually turns this barn section into a full game that covers the entire movie’s story, it’s safe to say it could be fairly spectacular. For instance, it would be exhilarating to run through the streets of Raccoon City and have to weave in order to not get splatted by a plummeting body, and how or when Resident Evil’s Bryan obtains new weapons would already give the game a natural sense of progression as players go from set piece to set piece. Ammo would probably need to be scarce throughout this game, of course, or else the many padlocks Bryan comes across in the movie would be quick work for players. If this user is able to create an ending sequence where fans play as an enormous, mutated Bryan, essentially Resident Evil 2’s G4 William Birkin, then it could possibly be one of the most fun Resident Evil games of all time, official or not. Either way, if you love the classic Resident Evil experience rooted in the first several games of the survival horror franchise, this is a fan project you'll want to keep an eye on.
