Your streaming stick is slower than it should be, and your router is to blame

He's been building PCs since young, and when not creating content, you can often find him inside a chassis somewhere. Streaming sticks are incredible pieces of technology. They're essentially set-top boxes but in a compact form factor, replacing those hefty, bulky devices that would always sit below the big screen in the living room. Almost all of these devices rely on a stable wireless connection, but oftentimes they provide subpar experiences due to instability either within the stick itself or on the home network. If either occurs, you'll often experience sluggish performance and frustrating lag. Though cheap, costing less than $50 for a 4K-capable streaming stick, these devices are sensitive to congested Wi-Fi networks. We're moving more and more devices to the wireless network, and without knowing the full extent of what this can cause, the LAN can often grind to a halt when multiple clients are transferring large amounts of data. Sitting down with loved ones to enjoy the next episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit can prove challenging if it frequently buffers or takes a long time to load. But while the stick can sometimes feel slow with an underpowered processor, there's a good chance the issue is with your network, specifically your router. I've had some excellent viewing experiences with my Amazon Fire TV Stick, but there have been times when it struggled to quickly launch apps, handle switching between instances, and stream content over the network. It's not because it's old, but because Amazon didn't pack it with enough firepower, and we had a busy network. Streaming sticks are sensitive to bad Wi-Fi Your stick will suffer with a busy network or a weak signal The primary issue with streaming sticks when it comes to receiving wireless signals is their compact size. Your smartphone is designed with wireless signals in mind. Streaming sticks are built to receive data over the air and render video output to a connected display. They're smaller than a phone and are usually placed behind a TV to keep them out of sight, which can create more obstacles between their radios and the nearest node or router. It's easy to understate just how much interference the TV can cause. Inside your set are cables, electronic components, a hardware slab, and other elements that can interfere with the wireless connection between the stick and your router. And if the stick is located within a cabinet or pressed against a wall, things can become worse. Unlike a phone or laptop, where you'd typically physically move the device to catch wireless signals from your network better, the streaming stick largely sits put, and we sit there gazing at a spinning loading circle on the big screen. There's also a good chance the streaming stick you have doesn't have a LAN port for Ethernet cabling. I know mine sure doesn't. Some devices offer this feature, including the Apple TV 4K TV (Wi-Fi + Ethernet). Just because your home may be like mine with high-speed internet, streaming sticks rely on stable, low-latency, high-throughput local connections. It doesn't matter how quick your ISP link is if your local wireless can't keep up with the stick's demands, especially at 4K. Just because we pay for the fastest speed plan from our ISP doesn't mean you're guaranteed to experience those speeds in your home. The ISP will only guarantee speeds to your router. From there, you're at the mercy of the routing gods and the amount of interference present inside your home between where the router is located and your receiving device. Our 1Gbps connection from the outside comes in at our router, which then feeds a few access points (APs) inside the home. These are then responsible for handling throughput to wireless clients. As with accessing anything in the world over the internet, there are numerous steps to take to get from remote servers to the streaming stick. After passing through the router and cabling, the wireless modules (inside an AP or router) then broadcast the signal through materials and objects. The streaming stick then intercepts this signal using a small internal antenna. Processing happens locally, and the OS on the device handles everything else. This is how a quick speed test on your phone could mask the issues the stick may be experiencing, even if they're inside the same room and using the same SSID. Related Consider moving your router It's either that or your streaming stick Routers are often installed by the ISP or the homeowner wherever the cable enters the house. This can be where the signal is needed most, but it's often not the case. It wasn't in our home either. This is why I decided to make the jump from using a router with wireless capabilities to multiple APs with Ethernet links between them. Maximizing signal strength where it's needed most, including within the living room with the streaming stick, which just so happens to have stone walls — wireless signal kryptonite. If your router is located in a cupboard, behind a device, on the floor, or on one side of the building, it may not be broadcasting a signal effectively. Most modern hardware with more powerful wireless capabilities won't be too bothered by this since they can often compensate for the weaker broadcasting, but streaming sticks like the Amazon Fire TV Stick aren't so lucky. And don't be fooled by signal strength readings, as these are often misleading and don't tell the full story. The ideal location of a router is central, elevated, and out in the open. If you're unable to move the router or don't wish to add more wireless broadcasters, using an HDMI female-to-male cable with the streaming stick can sometimes help by allowing the device to be repositioned around the TV to better intercept the incoming signal. Network broadcast bands are more important than you think The battle of the bands Wireless routers, mesh nodes, and APs will use broadcast bands. These come in a few frequencies: 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz. The former is the most common and oldest of the bunch, with almost all devices supporting it. 5GHz and 6 GHz are faster and cleaner, though they have shorter ranges and struggle with penetrating solid objects. So, even though your router may support the 5GHz and 6GHz bands, it may not be able to use them to send data to the streaming stick, resulting in the slower, more crowded 2.4GHz band taking the baton. A streaming stick, like the Amazon Fire TV Stick we use in the living room, may struggle with high-bitrate 4K content. But 2.4GHz doesn't necessarily hurt performance. It's what everything will fall back on, so it can usually be congested with clients all transferring data. Moving more devices to wired connections and better utilizing available channels and bands can also make a big difference, leaving clients who absolutely have to use wireless free to use more of the available bandwidth. Our stick was competing against many other devices. I'm talking phones, laptops, tablets, smart speakers, the Ring doorbell, the TV itself, consoles, and smart home devices that weren't on the Zigbee network. To make matters worse, our bedroom was directly above the living room, which had a second streaming stick. If both were used simultaneously, you could kiss any notion of stable and enjoyable playback goodbye. Reducing the load on the wireless network is a great step for smart homes, home labs, and streaming. Related The problem is actually within your walls Buffering isn't the only symptom As well as sluggish loading of content, particularly 4K and high-res stuff, there are some other things to watch out for. To determine a router issue, I noticed thumbnails loading gradually (slower than lazy loading), menus with content taking a while to load, apps acting slow, and the remote feeling like it's not connected — a real problem with the Amazon stick when using the Fire TV app. Start with your router, and you'll end up with a cleaner network for streaming and everything else. If you still use an ISP router, it may be time to consider a switch to an aftermarket solution, mesh networking, or a few APs. The hardware supplied by an ISP may be designed only to be good enough for average use in a small flat or home. They often aren't designed with more than a hundred clients in mind, 4K streaming, and penetrating Wi-Fi. I also ran a quick test by moving the streaming stick closer to the wireless broadcaster to minimize interference. Once I realized it was an issue with how I was providing a signal to the stick, not the device itself, my LAN was better for it.
