On the other hand, a PC graphics card like my RTX GPU, is already the source of both video and audio. It has nothing to "return," so HDMI ARC never became a part of the equation. Consumer graphics cards do not ship with HDMI ARC ports. A PC GPU acts strictly as an upstream audio/video source. My new Alienware AW2726DM OLED monitor wasn't too much help, either. Like most PC monitors, it lacked an ARC port as well, meaning both ends of my cable were source-oriented devices trying to do jobs they were never designed for. No amount of swapping HDMI cables or switching between HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 was ever going to change that, sadly. The solution, at least on paper, was an HDMI-to-ARC converter. Then I looked up the price a converter that would support the 240Hz display I had — it would have made my "budget" soundbar cost more than twice as much as I'd originally paid for it, all because I'd misunderstood one acronym that most product listings barely bother to explain. HDMI ARC and eARC can carry uncompressed multichannel audio, and that's what opens the door to formats like Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and immersive surround sound technologies like Dolby Atmos on compatible hardware. On the other hand, Bluetooth almost always relies on compressed audio codecs to keep bandwidth requirements in check, and most implementations are still limited to stereo audio instead of true multichannel playback. For my desktop setup, Bluetooth has proven to be just good enough, and I don't regret sticking with it now after a few weeks of usage. However, if you're investing in a premium soundbar specifically for its surround sound capabilities, then HDMI ARC or eARC remains the gold standard.
