Your router's 5 GHz band has hidden channels that are faster than those you're probably using

Your router's wireless signals share the same spectrum as your neighbors' routers, which is partly the reason we face so many Wi-Fi issues. Anyway, the same spectrum, at least on the 5 GHz band, is also shared with military, weather, and commercial radar systems, necessitating the use of Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS). This technology forces your router to vacate a channel if it detects a radar signal on it. Most routers simply use the non-DFS channels of the 5 GHz band to avoid this conflict entirely. However, depending on the presence of radar installations in your vicinity, you may be able to use DFS channels permanently, accessing a much more congestion-free part of the spectrum. DFS channels work differently from the ones you're using right now They're reserved for military and weather radars first The 5 GHz band is the only one that shares spectrum with military and weather radar systems. It was assigned by the government for radar use long before modern Wi-Fi came about. Since radar operations are critical in nature, every Wi-Fi router is mandated to constantly check for a radar signal if it's connected to any of the designated DFS channels. If detected, your router has to switch to a non-DFS channel immediately to avoid interference. These DFS channels lie in the UNII-2 and UNII-2 Extended sections of the 5 GHz band. The UNII-1 and UNII-3 sections, on the other hand, don't overlap with radar frequencies. This is why you see most routers connected to channels 36–48 and 149–165 on the 5 GHz band. Your router doesn't need to scan for radar signals on these channels, preventing any unexpected disconnects and channel switching. The 2.4 GHz band doesn't overlap with radar frequencies at all, and the 6 GHz band works on different spectrum sharing frameworks. So, the DFS shenanigans don't exist on these bands. You could switch to DFS channels permanently, depending on where you live These faster channels aren't totally out of reach Since using one of the DFS channels, i.e., 52–144, can force your router to disconnect unexpectedly, it's safer to use the non-DFS channels. That said, if you live far away from any airports, military bases, seaports, and weather tracking stations, you could enjoy cleaner, more reliable connections on DFS channels. With no radar signals to compete with, your router will be able to use these channels without any problems. Whether you can choose a DFS channel in your router's settings depends entirely on the router model. Many Asus, TP-Link, Netgear, and Ubiquiti routers allow you to toggle DFS channels on, making them appear in the channel selection dropdown. Cheaper models and ISP-provided routers typically don't implement DFS technology at all, so you won't be able to pick DFS channels on these models. If you are in a crowded apartment complex safely away from any radar signals, you can experiment with DFS channels (if your router exposes them). If your router starts losing connection randomly, you can always toggle the setting off. With dozens of neighboring Wi-Fi networks crowding the non-DFS channels, you could potentially access a cleaner and faster section of the spectrum which most people don't even know about. Your router might face some hiccups on DFS channels, but they're still worth exploring You won't find out until you try Even if your router stays connected to DFS channels reliably, there are still some downsides to using them. Whenever your router reboots, it will have to perform a mandatory Channel Availability Check (CAC), which can take several minutes. During this window, all of your devices connected to the 5 GHz band will lose connectivity or be forced to use other bands. Frequent power cuts or maintenance-related reboots can make DFS channels annoying to use. Your older or budget devices might not be compatible with DFS channels, simply becoming unable to scan for the 5 GHz network. Besides, in some regions, your router could be mandated to transmit at a lower power, affecting your Wi-Fi performance. You'll find out the full impact of using DFS channels only after trying them out, so it is a matter of trial and error. DFS channels can potentially boost your 5 GHz performance Spectrum restrictions make it tricky to use DFS channels near radar installations, but if you're far enough, they offer a congestion-free spectrum for home Wi-Fi. Sure, you'll need to spend some time to figure out if reliable long-term connectivity is on the cards, but it's a one-time exercise. When everyone else is using crowded non-DFS channels, you can enjoy a cleaner section of the spectrum if your router allows.
