Luckily, there's a free solution hiding in your router's settings, and it takes just a few clicks to enable. Your smart TV knows more about you than you might expect It might be the least trustworthy device you own Smart TVs are a lot more than just a "dumb" display you project your content onto. They're effectively standalone mini computers running customized operating systems, ranging from Android TV and Google TV to webOS, Roku OS, Fire TV, and more. Regardless of the brand, model, or operating system, many smart TVs share similar privacy concerns, with automatic content recognition (ACR) being one of the biggest. This feature collects data about what you watch, and on many TVs, it can even identify content playing through other devices connected via HDMI, such as a game console or media player. While ACR is an option you can technically disable on many smart TVs, it's still unsettling to know how much data these devices can collect about your viewing habits. It also raises the question: what other data-collection features are built into smart TVs or added through future updates that we're not always aware of? But privacy isn't the only concern. Your smart TV isn't just a device that connects to the internet—it is another computer sitting on your home network. Unless you take steps to isolate it, it can communicate with other devices on your LAN, including your phones, computers, servers, and other smart home gadgets. That's especially concerning because smart TVs, like many IoT devices, can have a poor security track record. Some budget models receive limited software support and may be abandoned after only a few years, leaving potential vulnerabilities unpatched. If your smart TV is ever compromised, it could provide a hacker with a foothold from which they can probe your LAN to potentially target other connected devices. The main difference is that your smart TV can no longer discover or communicate with other devices on your network, like your smartphone, PC, or media server. The best part about client isolation is that it's incredibly common—you don't need an expensive router to unlock it. Both my old TP-Link Archer C6 and my new $50 Wi-Fi 7 router have client isolation, so if you've bought a router in the past decade or so, there's a good chance yours has it. Just keep in mind that different brands call this feature by different names, and some offer similar features with slightly different behavior, such as AP isolation, wireless isolation, or guest network isolation. It's also worth pointing out that routers don't all handle client isolation in exactly the same way. On most routers, isolated devices can't communicate with each other or other devices on the LAN, but some implementations only block access to the main network while still allowing devices on the isolated network to communicate with each other. Another important difference is how much control routers give you over isolation. Some models only offer a simple on/off toggle, while others allow more granular rules about which devices or networks can communicate with each other. To find and enable client isolation on your router, head over to your admin panel (usually by typing your router's IP address, such as 192.168.1.1, into your browser and logging in with your admin credentials) and look through the Wireless, Guest Network, IoT Network, or Security settings. Find an option called Client Isolation, Device Isolation, AP Isolation, or something similar, then enable it on the network your smart TV is connected to. Depending on your specific router, the exact wording and layout might be a little different. Since your smart TV now lives in its own sandbox, it can no longer directly communicate with other devices on your home network. This breaks features like Chromecast and AirPlay, Jellyfin/Plex automatic discovery, smart TV integrations, DLNA media sharing, and other features that rely on local communication instead of cloud-based services. Whether this is a deal-breaker depends entirely on how you use your smart TV. If you only ever use it to stream shows and videos from the internet, it's not a major drawback. However, if you self-host your own media server, things can become a little trickier. Depending on how your router handles client isolation, you may be able to create exceptions that allow your smart TV to communicate with your server, or you can place both devices on a network where they can communicate directly. If you've got a more advanced setup, you can use VLANs and firewall rules to keep your devices separated while still allowing specific services to work. A small change can improve your network's security If you mainly use your smart TV to stream content from the internet, enabling client isolation is a simple way to reduce its access to the rest of your network. It only takes a few minutes to set up, but it can go a long way toward improving your network's privacy and security without affecting your everyday streaming experience.
