You use the same radio waves as your neighbors to connect to the internet. As much as you'd like an exclusive wireless highway to send and receive your data packets, you need to account for some interference. The default settings of your router are probably not configured to tackle this interference in the best way possible, which is why your Wi-Fi feels slower than it should. You might be unknowingly using the same crowded wireless channel as your neighbors. Your router's auto channel selection doesn't account for the dynamically changing network load in your apartment complex, which is why you're likely using the wrong channel. Manually scanning for and selecting the best channel is the way to go if you want to minimize Wi-Fi interference from your neighbors. Your router is tackling co-channel and adjacent channel interference It's brutal for your router out there Most of us don't have the luxury of living in an isolated house or mansion where there's near-zero interference from neighboring networks. Dense urban environments will always have dozens of networks competing for the same airwaves in proximity. Whether you're using the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz bands, you're bound to have neighboring routers broadcasting on the same bands. There are many wireless channels to choose from, but very few of them are non-overlapping. The 2.4 GHz band has just three non-overlapping channels, while the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands have significantly more. Still, your neighbors are vying for those channels as much as you, and hence, your device often has to wait its turn as one of your neighboring routers finishes its transmission. This is known as co-channel interference. Adjacent channel interference occurs when your router operates on a channel that partially overlaps with your neighboring router's channel. This degrades signal quality as both your neighbor's router and yours create mutual interference. Auto channel selection doesn't work the way people think it does Your "best channel" selection is outdated Credit: NetSpot Proper channel selection should minimize interference from neighboring networks, but most routers don't do it the right way. While auto channel selection picks the least crowded channel for your router, it sticks to that channel until the next power cycle. Auto channel selection uses a static snapshot of your neighboring Wi-Fi landscape. It isn't a dynamic scan, so switching to a better channel on the fly isn't one of your router's capabilities. Since different channels could be congested at different times of the day, the channel picked by your router at the time of the initial scan might very well end up being the wrong one later. Besides, your neighbors might have jumped to different channels manually or after a router reboot. Most people think operating on channels 1,4 and 11 on the 2.4 GHz band, and 36, 40, 44, and 48 on the 5 GHz band is enough to minimize wireless interference. However, almost everyone around you is using these channels, and your channel scan is almost always outdated. Manual channel and width selection improves your Wi-Fi experience Periodic scans can reveal the cleanest channels For the best results, you need to trigger a channel scan regularly. You could keep auto channel selection on, and restart your router at periodic intervals to trigger a fresh scan. Alternatively, you could manually select a non-overlapping channel (or even an overlapping one if it's less crowded) by using a tool like WiFi Analyzer. It lists all the Wi-Fi networks in your surroundings, including their relative strength and current channel. By picking a channel with the least number of strong networks, you can legitimately make your Wi-Fi feel snappier. I did this myself by moving from channel 6 to 11 on my 2.4 GHz network after WiFi Analyzer showed fewer networks on channel 11. The speed on the 2.4 GHz band jumped from around 50 Mbps to 90 Mbps in one of the rooms away from the router. That's a significant boost simply from jumping from one non-overlapping channel to another. A related setting is channel width, which you can also change on your router's settings page. A higher channel width increases the throughput, but also increases the interference from neighboring networks. Hence, 20 MHz is recommended instead of 40 MHz on the narrow 2.4 GHz band, while 40 MHz usually works better than 80 MHz on the 5 GHz band. You could also experiment with lowering the transmit power of your router to reduce the interference from neighboring networks. This also reduces the radio noise within your network, making it easier for devices to connect to your router. Since this works best if everyone in the neighborhood reduces their router's transmit power too, this might not show a huge difference in reality. Most people aren't aware of channel selection To be fair, the average user doesn't know about most router settings that could significantly improve their Wi-Fi experience. Using an uncrowded channel is probably the most basic of Wi-Fi tips, but most people keep using their router's default settings. If your Wi-Fi feels sluggish despite a decent speed test, try jumping to a cleaner wireless channel. The reduced interference from neighboring networks could make it visibly snappier.
