It's the massive PCB (Printed Circuit Board) that literally brings all of your components together. It allows your components to communicate with one another, and it contains the firmware that your computer needs to start up before the operating system takes over. While it's not common or easy to damage your motherboard during a normal PC build, it can happen. What makes it worse is that isolating the motherboard as the problem is not always easy. However, if you encounter one of these five signs, the odds are leaning towards the big board being borked. The system won't power on at all Total silence is a bad sign So you've carefully put your components together, double-checked all the connections, and excitedly hit the power button. Nothing happens. Now, this isn't immediately a motherboard damage signal, but there aren't that many things to eliminate before the motherboard is the only thing left. After all, a dead CPU or dead RAM won't usually prevent the machine from powering on. Your motherboard will give you a beep code or an error code on its display, should it have one, that tells you what's gone wrong. However, if the motherboard itself isn't working, it can't even do that much. The main thing to check here is whether your PSU is working correctly. It's always worth owning a PSU tester so you have a quick and independent way to verify that a PSU is working as expected. If your PSU tester shows that there's nothing wrong, and you've checked that all the motherboard power connections are present and correct, then a complete lack of response points towards a dead or damaged mobo. Why? Well it could be something you did during installation, such as ESD (Electrostatic Damage), shorting the board with incorrect standoffs, or bending the board to the extent that circuitry is damaged. But, even if you did none of those things, you could simply have a DOA (Dead On Arrival) motherboard, which means you need to pack it up and send it back for replacement. Assuming that it's new and under warranty. It powers on, but POST is inconsistent or impossible Round and round you go Credit: Ismar Hrnjicevic / How-To Geek Don't get too excited if your fans spin up and there are lights, because your motherboard might still be in a bad way if it keeps failing to POST (Power-On Self-Test) consistently. Sometimes it does, other times it doesn't. Which indicates it's an intermittent problem. Here you have more components to eliminate than just the PSU. The usual strategy here is to keep removing components until your computer POSTs reliably. That generally means having only the CPU and a single stick of RAM slotted in. No PCIe cards, no SSDs, or anything else other than a GPU if your CPU doesn't have an integrated graphics chip. Just the bare minimum you need to boot. Since you are getting power, it means your motherboard might have error codes that tell you that you're dealing with a CPU or RAM issue specifically, or some other useful data. You can act on this (e.g. by swapping to another RAM stick or slot) to narrow down the true culprit. If that still doesn't solve the issue, again we're leaning more towards a motherboard issue. Swapping with a compatible donor board to confirm is the clincher, of course, but if it's a board under warranty, this is enough justification to RMA it. RAM slots, PCIe slots, or USB ports randomly stop working We're just not connecting like we should A typical motherboard has dozens of connectors and interfaces. Because of this complexity, it's entirely possible for parts of a motherboard to stop working while the rest works just fine. Your sound chip may be damaged, or a USB controller, or just the traces to specific USB ports. This is why it's important to ensure that all ports and slots on your motherboard are working after a build. If you only realize later that a subsystem in your motherboard isn't working correctly, it might be too late to return it, or simply more difficult. Strange instability starts after the build The ghost in the machine This is one of the hardest things to pin on your motherboard specifically. If you're getting random freezes, BSODs, or immediate shutdowns, the motherboard can certainly be involved. The problem is that your PSU, CPU, RAM, or components like the GPU and SSD can all cause these issues as well. Which means you're in for a long systematic process of elimination before you can say your motherboard is the issue here. Sometimes you can actually see the damage Sometimes the "sign" is pretty literal. Broken connectors, scorch marks, cracks in the board, and other obvious evidence of damage is a dead giveaway. It might seem silly to mention this, but what matters is that you don't try to power a motherboard on or use it with other components if it has clear visual signs of damage. Unless you also feel like saying goodbye to other components that you connect to an obviously damaged board.
