The movie is rooted very much in Mahershala Ali's Latif, who is wrestling with his devout faith in Islam and his lingering fury over the loss of his wife. This is compounded by his former work as an assassin coming back into play when his old handler tries to hire him to kill a local religious leader for the sake of his nephew. The ensuing gorgeously constructed chaos gets numerous people killed and reveals the true ways that God gets involved with genuine faith over any specific belief system. How Latif Survives His Final Encounter With Hwan Yoon The ending of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother initially seems to be setting up Latif's death at the hands of Hwan Yoon's followers, only for a literal miracle to revive him. Seeking to resolve his feud with Hwan Yoon after discovering that the Christian fundamentalists have attacked his community and killed his Iman, Abdul Malik, Latif leaves his children with his sister's family and confronts them. Saving Hatty despite their earlier intentions, Latif remains behind and covers his escape by fighting and killing several of the gunmen working for Hwan Yoon. However, there are just too many people, and Latif is shot down, seemingly perishing right then and there. However, the prayers of his daughter Fatiha are answered, and Latif is restored to life. It's a big moment for the character, whose devout faith survived the death of his wife but had been left shaken by her loss. Latif spends the movie pointedly refusing to bow during prayers. While he adheres to cultural touchstones like fasting during Ramadan, he angrily lashes out when his son insists on conducting their regular prayers on the run. While Latif hasn't lost his faith, his devotion has been altered by his wife's death. It's notable, then, that it is Fatiha, who has been seen casually ignoring some of the more stringent teachings of their faith, who finally makes some unseen connection with God. She doesn't feel different or know that her father lived until he returns home, but it is a genuine reward for their faith and their love. The Religious Significance Of Hwan Yoon Sparing Latif After The Miracle What makes the miracle more interesting is the way that it connects Latif to Hwan Yoon. While both men are devout in their faith, they couldn't be more different. Whereas Latif is a humble and principled Muslim who uses violence only when he must, Hwan Yoon is a showy and bombastic Christian who encourages his flock to change the world by force if necessary. However, they also become connected through a miracle prayed for by a woman in their life. Hwan Yoon's origin story was that he was overseas fighting in Iraq when an IED briefly killed him -- only for his mother's prayers to restore him to life. This was what motivated much of Hwan Yoon's self-confidence, as he took his restoration as a sign of his role as a soldier of his God. The fact that a Muslim man experiences the same miracle, brought about in a similar manner, clearly shakes Hwan to his core. His final scene is walking alongside Latif, asking who was praying for him. When he learns it was his daughter, Hwan backs away and is left in awe. It's an interesting beat precisely because of how it subverts any obvious meaning either man could take from it. Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is very much a movie about faith and how genuine acts compare to rituals without heart or interpretations of the divine for selfish purposes. Fatiha, much like Hwan's mother, prayed for mercy and help with genuine faith. Their prayers were answered. It undercuts the showy faith of Hwan or the blunt practices of Latif, rewarding real faith and vulnerability. Faith And Family: The True Meaning Of Your Mother, Your Mother, And Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is a particularly somber story that blends together a keen focus on faith and family as complementary forces in life. Latif may be an effective hitman, Hwan Yoon may be an opportunistic leader, and Mike Mahmoudi (Latif's handler who eventually turns on him) may be a criminal, but they're all inspired and driven by their family. It is through them that they get closest to the divine, especially for Latif and Hwan. Mike is also portrayed as a religious man, albeit one who is able to casually excuse the sexual material that his nephew produces. All three have visions of their faith and are willing to kill in defense of it. However, those actions never actually get any connection to the divine. Instead, it is small moments of humanity and hope that see God get involved. It suggests a deeper reward for spirituality than religion -- God doesn't restore any of the Christians who die fighting Latif, after all. It's a movie that rewards those who make a real call to God instead of just reciting the creeds and shaping them to your liking. It's also why Latif's faith is so compelling in contrast. He believes in God but is furious over his wife's death. However, his resurrection forces him to recognize the gift that is his family, leading him to simply walk away from the fight to be reunited with them. It gives Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother a spiritually powerful core.
