Netgear sells a mesh system that costs more than most laptops. Then it explains on its own website why the wireless half of it is the weak part. Eero says a gentler version of the same thing. Now, we at XDA have already realized this case through our own experiences. We have gone from your mesh Wi-Fi not being the problem to the wired upgrade your walls already have. So I decided to skip the reviews this time: no more of 'using MoCA adapters, then running tests, and reading speeds'. As I said, you will find a plethora of information around those, already at XDA. With this article I planned to read the manufacturers instead. It turns out that Netgear, Eero, Apple, and Cloudflare all have published explanations that point to the same underlying problem. And yet, most people don't realize the extent of this problem. A second mesh node doesn't hand out a second microphone It just puts another mouth on the one already in the room Let's start with the part the reviews need to skip. A Wi-Fi channel behaves like a room with one microphone. Everyone hears everything, and the one who holds it gets to talk. The rule has a name: carrier sense with collision avoidance, and its job is to make sure one radio at a time transmits in a given space. Your laptop is in that room. So is your phone, the doorbell camera, every satellite in your mesh, and your neighbor's router if it landed on your channel. Speed describes how fast you talk while you hold the microphone. It says nothing about how long you wait to get it. A weak, far-off device talks slowly to be understood, so it holds the microphone longer. So a third satellite doesn't hand out another microphone. It puts another mouth on the one already there, and XDA's reporting on what extra satellites do to throughput lands in the same place. What nobody explains is who those satellites are talking to while they hold it. Wi-Fi 7 borrows a second microphone from a room nobody has walked into And your next laptop is going to want it back A satellite's backhaul is the link carrying its traffic back to the router, and it has one job. Hear what the router said, then say it again for the far end of the house. On a dual-band kit, it does that on the band your devices already use, so every packet takes the microphone twice. Eero, which sells wireless mesh, puts it in its own key takeaways: wiring the nodes to the router instead of letting them talk wirelessly frees up bandwidth and improves speed, stability and latency. That is a company describing the cost of its own default setup. Netgear's Wi-Fi 7 answer is real, and its page is the only marketing I've read that argues with itself. The Orbi 970 gives backhaul a dedicated 5 GHz radio, then uses Multi-Link Operation to bond it with 6 GHz for up to 10 Gbps, against roughly 2 Gbps a generation ago. That 6 GHz radio carries about 11.5 Gbps of capacity, and Netgear reuses most of it for backhaul because hardly anyone owns Wi-Fi 7 devices yet. That's a second microphone borrowed from a room nobody has walked into. It works because you haven't bought the hardware that would fill the room. So the mechanism is on the record and the fix has a shelf life. The check that settles it is five browser tabs and no purchase A speed test measures how fast you talk, never how long you wait A speed test pulls one big file while nothing else is happening and reports how fast that went. That's the microphone-holding number. The thing you actually feel — the call that breaks up when somebody starts a backup — is how often you get a turn. Apple built a measurement for that and ships it with every Mac. It grades a connection Low, Medium or High, and calls Low the state where video calls and gaming turn unreliable as soon as another device starts downloading. That's the symptom, written down by the company that made the laptop. The metric under that label isn't an Apple house standard. It's round-trips per minute, and it lives in a Standards Track proposal at the IETF co-written by Apple engineers, which puts numbers on the scale. About 300 round-trips per minute is the floor for an acceptable phone call. Around 1,000 is where a call stops being merely fair. Low, Medium and High never gave you that. You don't need a Mac for the same idea. Cloudflare's browser test scores loaded latency — your ping while the connection is busy — next to download speed, then grades the result for streaming, gaming and calls. Open the page it points you at for a 'poor network' score and the first suggestion is a wired connection. Run the browser test twice. Once beside your router, once in the room that annoys you. If the download figure barely moves and the loaded latency triples, your devices are fine and the hop behind them isn't. That's the diagnosis. The cure is where I have to be honest about what a wire can't do. A wire in the wall doesn't reach every room And it was never going to fix a weak signal to your phone Here’s the catch nobody talks about. Wiring a satellite’s backhaul, either with Ethernet or the coax already in your walls, gives it a dedicated line to the router. It stops competing with your devices for wireless airtime. But it never changes the final wireless hop to your phone, so a weak room can still stay weak. The alliance behind networking over coax rates the MoCA backhaul case at up to 2.5 Gbps, with less than 2.5 ms of average one-way latency across 400 to 1,675 MHz. Then comes the list nobody puts in the ad. What it takes Why it matters A pair of MoCA 2.5 adapters One at the router, one at the satellite A splitter that passes 1,675 MHz Older ones stop near 1,000 MHz, just under the band A point-of-entry filter Keeps your traffic in your walls and off the street A coax outlet in the right room The part nobody sells you Coax is a shared medium too, so what you get is a second room with one microphone in it, not a private line per device. The faster version isn't coming either, and XDA has watched MoCA 3.0 fail to arrive for years. Notice what Netgear puts on the back of its Wi-Fi 7 flagship anyway. Ten-gigabit Ethernet ports, and its own suggestion to use them as backhaul. The best wireless backhaul on the market ships with a wire. The companies selling the best wireless systems have already told you this None of this is on the box, and all of it is on the product pages you'd read before buying. Netgear's own capacity figures, Eero's own best practice, and the first line of advice in that last Cloudflare screenshot all point the same way. So, before another node goes into the cart, open the tabs. If the download figure holds up and the responsiveness doesn't, a new satellite is one more mouth on the same microphone.
