Young Jesus – “The Devil”

"Young Jesus." It's not a long band name by any means, but it's kind of a mouthful, isn't it? What if John Rossiter's one-man indie rock project went with something shorter and punchier instead? What if he cleaned that name up a bit? What if he called it... Teenjus?I don't know. I'm just spitballing here. Throwing out some ideas. Anything can happen in a brainstorm. Rossiter's last Young Jesus album was 2014's The Fool, and he followed it with the benefit EP John Case a few months later. On Bandcamp today, he shared a mythic country-rock freakout called "The Devil." Rossiter plays every instrument on the track, and he sings it in a multitracked falsetto yowl. It's a weird one! Here's what Rossiter has to say in the Bandcamp description:I took the money I made from scoring a documentary about Ferraris and bought a violin from Gary Chen at Stein on Vine. I brought the violin to Hen House Studios, laid down a drone over a drum machine and finished the instrumentals in a day. It was the first time I'd played violin since I played Concierto for Two Violins studying under Lora Zhizhin 25 years ago.Harlan sent me the stems and I wrote some lyrics over it. I had been dreaming about the devil a lot. In the year since making the tune I've been running into the devil more and more. For most of my life I've shut him out completely or pretended he didn't exist.It's no exaggeration to say I felt possessed playing the guitar solo.
