You can see everything… including Nathan Fielder ‘falling in love’ with Elizabeth Holmes

The hit documentary “You Can See Everything” is being hailed as a triumph of filmmaking. Its directors are already hotly tipped for Oscar glory after setting out to discover whether Elizabeth Holmes has created yet another persona for the cameras, one that’s far more demure and fragile than the infamous deep-voice, turtleneck-wearing persona she is most famous for. But there’s another question hanging over the disgraced Theranos founder’s latest close-up: Has she also managed to win over the person telling her story? Elizabeth Holmes and Nathan Fielder in “You Can See Everything”, the documentary now getting Oscar buzz. A24 Sources familiar with the production tell Page Six that director Nathan Fielder appeared to develop more than a passing fondness for Holmes during filming — a dynamic they believe may help explain why her longtime partner, Billy Evans, emerges in a less-than-flattering light. “I think Nathan fell in love with Lizzie,” said well-placed movie source, “I think he totally fell for her.” “Nathan knows how he feels about Elizabeth. Whether he shares his feelings in public is yet to be seen,” added another source close to the production. The disgraced Theranos founder got engaged to Billy Evans in 2018. The couple share two children – and want more kids. Indeed, in one of the film’s final intimate moments, Fielder is seen swimming in the ocean with Holmes, who lures him into the water. The documentary was filmed shortly before Holmes went to start her 11-year prison sentence for fraud related to blood test company Theranos, the “revolutionary” company she founded which raised a valuation of $9 billion, before being exposed as a con. Fielder, 43, was most recently linked to best-selling author Emma Cline, whom he accompanied to Cultured magazine’s Cult100 Gala at the Guggenheim Museum in April. This week, however, gossip site DeuxMoi alleged the couple had split. Fielder did not respond to Page Six’s request for comment. Courtesy Everett Collection Fielder and his co-director, Lance Oppenheim, moved into the small rental home in Del Mar, Calif., that Holmes, 42, and Evans, 34, shared with their two young children, William, now 5, and Invicta, now 3, for 34 days leading up to Holmes’ surrender to prison in May 2023. As Holmes prepared to begin her 11-year prison sentence, Page Six can reveal that she was undergoing IVF treatment. “The goal was to be able to have another child when she was out,” said a source in the know. Yet despite being the one who brought Fielder on board, we’re told Evans has mixed feelings about the film. He told pals he did not agree to a much-publicized full-frontal nude scene, which left him “feeling violated.” There are also moments where he’s seen as controlling; wrestling a bowl away from Holmes as she tries to inexpertly whisk eggs. Holmes’ children, son William and daughter Invicta, have been able to visit her in prison in Texas. BACKGRID Holmes was seen with a friend and her children at FCC Bryan prison back in February. BACKGRID The couple were not given edit approval. Before the film’s release, Evans, who refers to Holmes as his ‘wife’ despite the couple not being legally married, told the “All-In Podcast”, “I haven’t seen it. I might think this is the dumbest thing I have ever done.” Evans supported Holmes throughout her trial. The couple are seen outside the San Jose courthouse in March 2023. Getty Images “As filming was kicking off, Elizabeth and Billy had just welcomed their daughter, their son hadn’t turned two yet, and Elizabeth was preparing to begin [her] prison sentence,” said the source close to production. “And on top of that, they had invited the crew to all but move in with them.” “I wanted our kids to be more like her than me, that’s when I knew,” Evans told the podcast of starting a family with Holmes. “Wills is so much like his mom. He has an enormous heart, and he isn’t afraid to show it.” Evans also defended his decision to stand by Holmes, saying he wanted people to see the person he knew rather than the disgraced businesswoman portrayed in the headlines. “I have gone through this consistent experience with the people who love me most, from my grandmother to my best friends,” he said. “They’d hear I knew [Elizabeth Holmes] or I was falling for this person and now we’re going to have a kid… in the beginning, every single one of these people thought I was crazy.” Holmes and Evans gaze at each other outside court. Getty Images He recalled telling them: “‘Do you know who she is?’ I would ask them, ‘I understand why you feel that way but just meet her.’ And they would meet her and spend time with her and see her in a totally natural environment, like going on a hike or helping a friend. Every opinion of her would radically shift.” In January 2022, a federal jury found Holmes guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and three counts of wire fraud involving more than $140 million in investor funds. She was acquitted of charges related to defrauding patients. Holmes and her former boyfriend and Theranos COO, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, falsely claimed that the company’s proprietary “Edison” machine could run hundreds of comprehensive medical tests using just a few drops of blood from a finger prick. In reality, the technology did not work as advertised, and the company secretly relied on conventional commercial blood analyzers. Holmes was feted by industrialists after she claimed to have created a machine that would upend the health industry. She’s seen at the Fortune Global Forum in San Francisco, Calif. in November 2015. AP Holmes’ sentence was later reduced to roughly 10 years and three months. She and Balwani were also ordered to jointly pay $452 million in restitution to victims. Reports say Holmes is expected to transfer to a halfway house next August, with her full release scheduled for February 2030. Those close to her hope she could actually be released to home confinement even earlier next year. “They knew they had no control over how any particular moment would end up playing out on film,” said the production source of Holmes and Evans. “And there were definitely some tense moments and points where they were uncomfortable. But that’s also real life.” Fielder has been open about his strained relationship with Evans. Following a screening earlier this month, he claimed that Evans, the scion of a wealthy hospitality group, “started trying to exert a level of control over the process that made it very hard to engage with him, and it was uncomfortable for us and [production company] A24. Holmes speaks at the 2015 Glamour Women of the Year Awards in NYC where she was recognized in the entrepreneurship category. Larry Busacca “We sort of had to stop,” he added. “Communication broke down basically, and we’ve been in that state for a little bit. So it’s been challenging in that way.” Fielder, Oppenheim and their team went on to follow Evans and the children as they moved closer to Federal Prison Camp Bryan, the minimum-security women’s prison in Texas where Holmes is currently serving her sentence. What makes the resulting film even more complicated is the extent to which Fielder and Oppenheim became entwined with Holmes’ family. “It was a three-year-plus process and a pretty all-consuming experience, so you inevitably develop a bond. The crew played guitar for the kids, helped babysit, and celebrated birthdays together. It wasn’t just showing up, getting the footage and going home,” said the production source. Dimitrios Kambouris The resulting meta-documentary has become a critical and financial smash, grossing more than $45 million at the box office. But while the film invites viewers to scrutinize the couple’s every move, there are questions about how much of what they’re watching actually happened — and how much is the filmmakers’ interpretation. Some of the documentary’s most consequential conversations were never captured on camera. Instead, actors step in to recreate them — leaving viewers to judge not the original exchanges, but a version reconstructed by the filmmakers.” Take the money meeting, for example. Holmes was pictured working out at FCC Bryan in Bryan, Texas. She’s believed to be eligible for release to a a halfway house next year. Toby Canham for NYPost.com In a reenactment, Evans, played by Christopher Abbott, raises the prospect of profit participation with Fielder, Oppenheim and A24 executives after Holmes leaves the room to check on the children. The timing of the conversation — and Holmes’ absence — become grounds for suspicion. Was Evans trying to cash in without her knowledge? Was he controlling her, or did she understand more than she let on? But the audience isn’t watching the original meeting. They are watching a later reconstruction of it. Who said what, when they said it and how they delivered it all help determine whether the scene looks like a business negotiation or a shakedown. One industry insider told Page Six the sequence was highly unusual. Holmes went through a very public trial in San Jose, Calif. in 2022. AP “You always negotiate any backend profits before a deal gets signed. I have a hard time believing this played out the way it did on screen,” said an industry insider. Then comes the prison visit. The reconstruction centers on whether Holmes knew Evans was negotiating a share of the documentary’s profits. “It’s interesting that this became such a central question only through reenactments. You have to wonder whether A24 regretted the terms and wanted a way out,” said the insider. We have reached out to A24 for comment. Evans said he agreed to making the documentary so the public could see the real Elizabeth Holmes. In the scene, Fielder tries to remember exactly what Holmes said during the visit. He asks Amanda Seyfried, who reprises her role as Holmes, whom she played in 2022 Hulu hit “The Dropout,” to help reconstruct the exchange, then works through the wording aloud. Did Holmes say she knew Evans was “talking to you about it”? Or did she say he was “talking to you about something”? Holmes was pictured at a court hearing in June 2019. Getty Images Fielder’s uncertainty becomes part of the drama. Seyfried then questions whether Fielder’s feelings toward Elizabeth have influenced his interpretation. Their final exchange ends with her saying: “It’s very complicated.” Fielder himself is still baffled by it all. “I still am not sure to this day what I experienced,” he said at the Q&A following the screening, “And it’s one of the reasons I’m excited for it to come out and more people see it.” As for Evans, “Nathan is great at what he does, no doubt there,” said a friend. “Nobody opens their home to Nathan Fielder expecting to come out looking perfect. Whatever anyone’s opinion of Billy may be, I think we can all agree the man would walk to the ends of the earth for Elizabeth and his children.”
