Source: Steam Published Jul 29, 2026, 1:21 AM EDT Simon is a Computer Science BSc graduate who has been writing about technology since 2014, and using Windows machines since 3.1. After working for an indie game studio and acting as the family's go-to technician for all computer issues, he found his passion for writing and decided to use his skill set to write about all things tech. Since beginning his writing career, he has written for many different publications such as WorldStart, Listverse, and MakeTechEasier. However, after finding his home at MakeUseOf in February 2019, he would eventually move on to its sister site, XDA, to bring the latest and greatest in Windows, Linux, and DIY electronics. Try the free example, or point OpenMW-Web to your local Morrowind files for the full game. The game works best in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Brave for the time being. If you ever see someone do something cool with technology, but all you can do is look at it and ask, "Why?" you should know that the answer is almost always "Why not?" For example, someone took the open-source Morrowind engine, OpenMW, and made a version you can play entirely in your browser. Because why not? OpenMW-Web brings the joy of Morrowind to your web browser You can give it a try for free Over on the Morrowind subreddit, user Dumpster_Buddy posted their project. It's called OpenMW-Web, and the goal is to bring the open-source Morrowind engine to the browser. It doesn't require any installation or extensions; just open up the tab, and you're there. As for why they bothered, they state that they "just wanted to see if it could be done." Best of all, there's no need to mess with the game to get it to work properly: It's the actual engine, not a stream and not an emulator, so shadows, water, saves and gamepads all work. There's a small free example world if you just want to poke at it, or you can point it at your own Morrowind install and it reads the files straight off your disk. Nothing gets uploaded. Desktop Chrome, Edge or Brave work best right now. That's right; if you were hoping to play the entire thing for free, you're out of luck. Still, if you're curious about the game, you can head over to the OpenMW-Web website and give the example world a spin for free. I'd highly recommend buying the game if you like it; it's a little rougher around the edges than Oblivion and Skyrim, but it has a certain charm to it. Well, minus the Cliff Racers, at any rate.
