Image via Paramount+ Published Oct 16, 2026, 8:00 PM EDT Sign in to your ScreenRant account Yellowstone's Dutton family has never been particularly good at escaping its own cycle of violence, and Marshals season 2 is now putting one of its most important father-son relationships under serious strain. The Yellowstone spinoff follows Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton as he builds a new life as a U.S. Marshal after leaving the Yellowstone Ranch behind. However, Kayce's family remains at the center of his life, particularly his teenage son Tate (Brecken Merrill), whose childhood has been shaped by an almost unbelievable amount of violence and tragedy. Tate has already been kidnapped twice, watched his family come under repeated attack, survived the aftermath of his mother's brain injury as a young child and her (unrelated) death when he was a ripe teenager, and dealt with the murder of his grandfather, John Dutton (Kevin Costner). Now 17, he is old enough to understand the Dutton legacy but still young enough that Kayce feels responsible for protecting him from it. The tension between Kayce and Tate has been brewing for a while. Monica's death before Marshals season 1 made that relationship even more complicated. Tate was already dealing with the loss of his mother, but he also struggled to understand Kayce's response to her death and felt that his father was not doing enough to fight for justice. In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, Grimes described Kayce's relationship with Tate as a major plot point for the new season. Additionally, the actor revealed that the character will be dealing with a lot of guilt and regret in the new season. He explained, "Yeah, that's a really big storyline this year, is Kayce confronting his guilt about all the things that have happened to Tate." The actor pointed out just how much Tate had experienced at such a young age, including being kidnapped twice and having to kill multiple people. Grimes stated that these events are something that a child should never have to encounter. He further elaborated, stating that Kayce's response is to try to fix things, but that creates another problem. He knows Tate has been through too much, yet he does not necessarily know what Tate actually needs from him anymore. Check out his comments below: This is not something a child should have to go through. There's all this trauma and grief, taking big swings at trying to help, and not really knowing what the right thing to do is. Grimes said Kayce and Tate "butt heads" throughout the season before attempting to repair their relationship. Meanwhile, Tate makes "some pretty big choices" about where he wants his life to go. Tate's growing independence could ultimately become the biggest threat to his relationship with Kayce. The question becomes whether Kayce can accept that Tate may not want the future his father has imagined for him. This is also why Marshals' handling of the Yellowstone legacy matters. The spinoff does not need to recreate the original series' ranch conflicts to remain connected to Yellowstone. Kayce and Tate's relationship provides a much more personal way to explore what the Dutton name does to the next generation. The legacy of John Dutton and the Yellowstone Ranch continues to hang over Kayce, even though he has moved on from the ranch. Now, he has to figure out whether protecting Tate means keeping him away from that legacy or allowing him to decide for himself what being a Dutton means. The Marshals season 2 trailer revealed Tate's fate after the season 1 finale left his future uncertain, but simply getting Tate home has not solved the problems between him and his father. In fact, the first two episodes of season 2 have made it clear that Tate is becoming increasingly determined to make his own decisions. The season 2 premiere put Kayce in a position where he once again had to protect his son, while the second episode continued to explore the growing divide between them. And Luke Grimes has now explained why Kayce is struggling so much with the situation. Tate has survived more than enough trauma already. But if Kayce cannot find a way to understand the person his son is becoming, Marshals season 2 could leave the two Duttons permanently estranged. Release Date 2026 - 2026-00-00 Network CBS Showrunner Spencer Hudnut Kayce Dutton transitions from life on the Yellowstone Ranch to joining an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in Montana.
