Yellowstone Is Back As One Of Streaming's Biggest Shows

Published Jul 26, 2026, 5:12 PM EDT Tom is a Senior Staff Writer at Screen Rant, with expertise covering everything from hilarious sitcoms to jaw-dropping sci-fi epics. Initially he was an Updates writer, though before long he found his way to the TV and movies team. He now spends his days keeping Screen Rant readers informed about the TV shows of yesteryear, whether it's recommending hidden gems that may have been missed by genre fans or deep diving into ways your favorite shows have (or haven't) stood the test of time. Tom is based in the UK and when he's not writing about TV shows, he's watching them. He's also an avid horror fiction writer, gamer, and has a Dungeons and Dragons habit that he tries (and fails) to keep in check. The various platforms competing for viewer metrics in the streaming wars all have an original flagship show or two upon which their reputation rests. Netflix has ambitious genre series like Stranger Things and One Piece alongside its endless parade of gritty thrillers and wild K-Dramas, Prime Video has franchises as varied as Bosch and Fallout, and Apple TV+ has the market on original streaming sci-fi cornered with hits like Silo, Foundation, and Severance. For Paramount+, however, Yellowstone is undeniably its greatest weapon. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the neo-Western drama follows Kevin Costner's John Dutton III, the patriarch of a powerful Montana ranching family, as he fights to protect his land and legacy. Nearly a decade after the series debuted in 2018, it remains inarguably the most successful show associated with Paramount+. While Peacock still holds the US streaming rights, Yellowstone is synonymous with reasons to subscribe to Paramount+ in more or less every other territory where the service operates. That global reach has made the latest worldwide viewing figures particularly revealing. At the time of writing, Yellowstone is the most-viewed show on Paramount+ worldwide (via FlixPatrol), beating even its most recent spinoff, Dutton Ranch, the newly released fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and perpetual streaming heavyweight South Park. For a series that only ended two years ago, this is an exceptionally impressive achievement. More importantly, it shows that Yellowstone has already developed the kind of lasting legacy that most modern streaming dramas need years to build. Yellowstone Remaining A Streaming Hit Proves The Power Of Its Legacy Image courtesy of Everett The fact that Yellowstone can still reach the top of Paramount+'s global rankings proves how solid its legacy already is. The series only ended two years ago, which is nowhere near enough time for genuine nostalgia to fully set in. Yet viewers are already returning to the Dutton family's story, particularly as new additions to the franchise give audiences fresh reasons to revisit the original. That effect has been especially noticeable with Dutton Ranch, which brought Kelly Reilly's Beth Dutton and Cole Hauser's Rip Wheeler back into the spotlight. The spinoff became Paramount+'s biggest original series launch, drawing 12.9 million global viewers during its first seven days (via Variety). However, globally speaking, Yellowstone is currently beating Dutton Ranch when it comes to viewing figures. This is an incredible achievement that’s bucking the trend most prestige streaming shows experience. Many comparable streaming dramas would be expected to experience a sharp decline within the first few years after their finales. It takes time for viewers to want to return to recently concluded series in large enough droves for them to reclimb the charts. This hasn’t been the case for Yellowstone, though. Every new franchise release reignites passion for the original show and seems to bring viewership figures back to where they were when it was still on the air. Yellowstone continues to be an obsession for its fans, and they show little sign of abandoning it. It May Have Ended Two Years Ago, But Yellowstone Is Still Gaining Momentum Yellowstone did more than establish Paramount+ as a global destination for prestige drama. It also proved that the shared cinematic universe model associated with sci-fi and fantasy franchises such as Star Wars and the MCU could work just as effectively with grounded dramas set in the real world. The Yellowstone franchise expanded first in through the 2021 spinoff 1883, which explored the Dutton family's origins, before 1923 continued the story to another generation in 2022 with Harrison Ford's Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren's Cara Dutton. Now 2026’s Marshals and Dutton Ranch have extended that legacy into the post-John Dutton era of Yellowstone’s timeline. The franchise's expansion is also set to continue in both directions with future spinoffs like 1944, another Dutton prequel, and 6666, which will focus on the Four 6’s ranch in Texas. This structure gives Yellowstone an unusual advantage when it comes to preserving its legacy. Every new Yellowstone spinoff sends viewers back to the original series, which then creates a feedback loop as fans then want to explore the timeline further with yet more future releases. Demand begets supply, then supply begets more demand. With more projects in development, that cycle is likely to continue. Yellowstone may have ended, but its universe is still expanding, and its latest streaming success suggests its legacy is only becoming more valuable.
