The R2 is expected to sit above the R15 in Yamaha’s India line-up and target buyers looking for a more powerful step-up without moving into the higher-priced 300cc-plus supersport segment.Pre-bookings for the Yamaha R2 are already open for Rs 10,000. The booking amount is fully refundable, although refunds will be processed only after September 5. Customers who book the motorcycle ahead of the launch will also get priority.Yamaha R2 to sit above R15The R2 will sit above the R15 and Yamaha is expected to price the R2 at around Rs 2 lakh (ex-showroom), keeping it within reach of existing R15 customers looking to upgrade.R2 to retain Yamaha’s R-series DNAThe upcoming motorcycle is expected to carry the sharp, aggressive styling associated with the R-series, along with a fully faired body, clip-on handlebars and a committed riding position. Yamaha is also likely to offer a feature-rich package, potentially including a full-TFT instrument cluster, shift indicators, traction control, ABS and an updated version of the company’s Y-Connect system. The final equipment list, however, will be revealed closer to the launch. Yamaha’s patents filed in India had earlier hinted at the development of a new 200cc-class supersport. The R2 is expected to be manufactured in India, with production also serving export markets.Yamaha R2 performance could be keyThe R2 will enter a segment currently occupied by motorcycles such as the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR, both of which produce around 25bhp. Yamaha is therefore expected to focus heavily on the motorcycle’s power-to-weight ratio and riding dynamics. The R15 V4 weighs 141kg, significantly less than the KTM RC 200 at 160kg and the Hero Karizma XMR at 163.5kg. If Yamaha manages to keep the R2 relatively light, the motorcycle could offer the agile handling and lightweight character that have become synonymous with the R-series.For Yamaha, the R2 could therefore serve as an important upgrade path for R15 owners, combining the familiar supersport design and riding character with a more powerful engine.The Yamaha R2 will make its India debut on August 27.
