Sources report that the game publisher is "quietly pitching Hollywood on a pricey package of more than a dozen games," with specific franchises named including World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls, Diablo and Halo, whose rights have reverted to Xbox after initially being set at Paramount+. The new report went on to denote that part of the push is due to Xbox's recent financial struggles, with the studio having cut 3,200 jobs in July, and that Microsoft "would very much like a big check for its I.P.," with one source even indicating their hope for over $300 million for a long-term deal. Though the studio has not officially commented on the reports at the time of writing, their search is said to have Netflix, Paramount and Universal in early discussions. Even before this new report, Xbox had steadily begun building their roster of adaptations with multiple new projects in the works. After Fallout's critical and viewership success, the game publisher is staying in business with Amazon MGM, finally developing a proper adaptation of Wolfenstein over a decade after Resident Evil's Samuel Hadida initially sought to develop a film iteration of it. Moreover, they're also working again with Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as Station Eleven's Patrick Somerville, on the project after the post-apocalyptic hit. It is worth noting that Xbox has begun broadening its relationships with studios in recent years. Beyond Amazon MGM and Warner Bros., the studio is finally seeing movement on their long-gestating Gears of War adaptation with both a live-action film and an animated series at Netflix, the latter of which is being helmed by David Leitch. Moreover, they're teaming with Paramount Pictures for the first time on the Taylor Sheridan-penned Call of Duty movie, which is slated for a June 2028 release. Interestingly, the fact that Elder Scrolls is listed in the potential new adaptations Xbox is looking to develop marks a major change for the fantasy franchise. Bethesda exec Todd Howard has acknowledged the possibility of such an adaptation being made after Fallout's success, though has frequently expressed reluctance at moving ahead with it, fearing disappointing longtime franchise fans, and doing a disservice to the expansive lore of the games. If the financials on Xbox's desired partnership deals prove true, it would make sense if studios are somewhat reluctant to go through with it, as a $300-plus million price tag is not a low figure, and some studios are in the midst of box office fluctuations and merger deals. However, given how successful Microsoft's adaptations have been thus far, and the range of available properties, someone is sure to eventually negotiate a deal fitting everyone.
