The petitions stated that on October 31 and November 2, the "Special Commissioner (Crime) of Delhi Police" had purportedly sent "illegal content reports" to X concerning posts that allegedly defamed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. The petitioners' counsel said the authenticity of the notices was doubtful. (Photo: ITG)New Delhi,Nov 6, 2026 15:32 ISTSocial media platform X told the Delhi High Court on Friday that an imposter had sent requests seeking the removal of accounts belonging to the Internet Freedom Foundation and Software Freedom Law Centre, India, purportedly on behalf of the Delhi Police.X said it did not act on the requests and had filed a complaint with the Delhi Police to identify the imposter. The court was hearing petitions filed by the two organisations over the issue.X's counsel told Justice Amit Mahajan that the notices had not been sent by the Delhi Police and that no action had been taken against the petitioners."We did not act on it. Notices are not sent by the Delhi Police. We have filed a complaint with the Delhi Police last night to find the imposter," X's lawyer submitted. The senior counsel representing the petitioners said certain notices were purportedly issued by the "Special Commissioner of Police (Crime)" to X. The notices asked the platform to remove or withhold certain posts from their accounts within three hours and to block the accounts entirely. The petitioners' counsel, however, said the authenticity of the notices was doubtful. The petitions stated that on October 31 and November 2, the "Special Commissioner (Crime) of Delhi Police" had purportedly sent "illegal content reports" to X concerning posts that allegedly defamed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. The petitioners argued that the reports were legally unsustainable because they did not disclose due authorisation and did not comply with the requirements of the Information Technology Act.The court closed the proceedings after taking note of X's stand that it had not acted on the requests and had approached the Delhi Police to identify the person behind them.- Ends
