When pushed beyond their limits or used without precision, the abilities of several X-Men heroes can easily become weaponized forces of mass destruction. In X-Men: Omega Red Dawn #1, the heroes themselves are driven to attack innocents and each other, with an "Omega" symbol drawn on their forehead. It's up to the small squad of X-Men who cured themselves of Omega Red's spores to reverse the effects of the villain's makeshift mind control. X-Men: Omega Red Dawn takes place in a separate continuity to Earth-616, one where Wolverine's healing factor can actually become a cure for others' diseases, and where Magneto is only beginning to set his differences with the X-Men aside to help them find and rescue Professor X. In this timeline, Magneto's helmet not only acts as a barrier to protect the wearer from psychic attacks, but it can also be used to boost Cerebro's reach. Unfortunately for the X-Men, Omega Red is drastically more dangerous in this timeline than in most others. All of a sudden, Arkady Rossovich knocks out some of the most powerful X-Men, including Rogue and Jean Grey. Then, he takes several other mutants out of the picture by transforming them into rage-fueled zombies. These actions already surpass anything Omega Red has accomplished in Marvel's main continuity, where he's ruthless and lethal, but not to this extent. Since X-Men: Omega Red Dawn sets one timeline apart just to display his full potential, Omega Red gains the freedom to reveal everything he can do when he isn't a simple assassin. The same could apply to a long list of oft overlooked X-Men antagonists. For example, Mastermind's natural abilities make him powerful enough to accomplish something similar to what Omega Red is attempting in X-Men: Omega Red Dawn, yet he's rarely an authentic threat to the heroes. Both Selene and Spiral are powerful sorceresses, and Black Tom Cassidy could easily unleash chaos on entire cities or countries all on his own using his control over plant life. Of course, X-Men villains need to tone down their threat level in order to avoid destroying the world, which is why standalone stories like X-Men: Omega Red Dawn are rare opportunities for them to show off.
