X-Men Officially Reveals Name and Design of Rogue and Gambit's Son

Sign in to your ScreenRant account Marvel's X-Men comics just introduced the son of Rogue and Gambit, adding yet another twist to the franchise's fan-favorite romance. The young character's name is a heart-breaking callback, while making Gambit's own recent codename change even more tragic. Superhero relationships never seem to last, but Rogue and Gambit have turned out to be the exception. Following years of tumultuous romance, the two married in 2018, and have been committed partners ever since, recently running the Louisiana X-Men together and taking in a group of teen outcasts who have become a found family. That's been all the more meaningful because both Rogue and Gambit have tragic family lives. While Rogue never knew her father and lost her mother at a young age, Gambit was abandoned at birth due to his red eyes and raised by a gang of street thieves. Now, it seems their child may likewise never know his parents. X-Men Introduces Gambit's Son, Jean-Luc LeBeau In recent issues of Uncanny X-Men, Gambit has been corrupted by a cursed artifact he stole from a dragon. The artifact has turned him into the monstrous 'Wyvern' and given him a dark taste for human flesh. In this week's Uncanny X-Men #34 (Gail Simone, Luciano Vecchio, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles), Gambit seeks help from a troubled priest named Gabriel. Gabriel attempts to help Gambit confront his inner darkness, encouraging him to literally cut the evil out of his body. Gambit experiences a series of visions, including meeting his son Jean-Luc LeBeau. While Gambit is overjoyed to meet his son, Jean-Luc - who possesses Gambit's red eyes - tells his father that his recent adventures mean they may never meet in the flesh. Gambit's curse, and his decision to take the teenage Outliers in as his adopted children, has set events on a path where Rogue and Gambit may never have a biological child. In a heartbreaking twist, Gambit's son is named for Remy's adopted father, who took Remy in off the streets of Louisiana and gave him a home with the Thieves Guild. The choice of name connects Gambit's son to both his past and future, and what's at stake if he can't break the curse. Rogue and Gambit Have Kids Scattered Across the Multiverse While Jean-Luc LeBeau is introduced as the child Rogue and Gambit would have in Marvel's main timeline, many other stories have introduced kids for Rogue and Gambit. Among the most prominent are X-Men: The End's Olivier Raven, who possessed a variety of mental powers including memory absorption and hypnosis, and Captain Marvel: The End's Irene LeBeau, who is named for Rogue's adoptive mother Destiny (along with shapeshifter Mystique), and has Rogue's powers. As these characters show, Marvel tends to lean into Rogue's journey and legacy when depicting the pair's children, however Uncanny X-Men instead taps into Gambit's history, all the better to threaten him with what becoming 'Wyvern' will mean. Gambit's Son Shows How Bad His Curse Has Become While Gambit meeting his potential son is heartbreaking, it's also disturbing. That's because Gambit's cursed cannibalism is specifically directed at those he cares for, and even as he cradles his son, his internal monologue admits, "There's a truth dat I can't tell him wit'out breaking. That he smells. He smells so savory." Uncanny X-Men is really hammering home the idea that Gambit's curse could destroy everything good inside him. However, even if he manages to exorcise the monstrous Wyvern, the threat of his son won't be totally addressed. Jean-Luc is clear that by raising the Outliers, Gambit is giving up the child he and Rogue could have - a fact which is likely to hang heavy on the Uncanny X-Men leaders, and could even motivate them not to return to the family they've built back in Louisiana, curse or not. ​​​​Uncanny X-Men #34 is available now from Marvel Comics.
