Sign in to your ScreenRant account Across X-Men history, there have been many different versions of the Horsemen of Apocalypse - typically a group of four mutants enhanced by the villain's Celestial technology and brainwashed into his service. Now, 39 years after the team first appeared in Marvel lore, X-Men has assembled the ultimate version of the Horsemen as the guardians of Apocalypse's hi-tech tomb - the repository of all his deepest secrets and most secret technologies. In the recent Tomb of Apocalypse #3 - from Ashley Allen, Carlos Nieto, Domenico Carbone, Fernando Sifuentes and Joe Sabino - Wolverine, Jubilee, Rictor and Shatterstar encounter a new team of Horsemen made up of Apocalypse's greatest servants from across time and space. Here are the four terrors who make up the new Horsemen of Apocalypse... 5 Death | Horseman of Death Despite being thousands of years old, Death is suave and cultured, priding himself on winning fights thanks to his skill as a warrior. He uses his mask to hold back his mutant power - a gaseous cloud that kills anyone it touches. He tends to only unleash his powers against unworthy enemies. The oldest son of Apocalypse, Death was raised as a warrior among his siblings, born at some point before 2620 BC. Each sibling is named after an evil that Apocalypse and the mutants of the utopian nation of Okkara intended to erase from the world. Each member of the team is biologically immortal and possesses incredible superhuman strength and reflexes. Eventually defeated by Storm's Brotherhood in the war for Arakko (aka Mars) A member of Genesis' Brotherhood, operating in space Famine Control over water Pestilence Can generate arrows that spread disease Killed by Death after dishonorably attacking Storm. When the demonic realm of Amenth attacked Earth, Apocalypse was forced to abandon his children and wife Genesis outside reality, setting out on a mission to raise a mutant army powerful enough to one day free them from their eternal war against the demons of Amenth. Following the events of the 2019-2024 'Krakoan Era,' Apocalypse now lives on Mars in the mutant settlement of Arakko. He has chosen Doug Ramsey, aka Revelation, as his heir on Earth. As millennia passed, Apocalypse's children were hardened by war, eventually swearing allegiance to Amenth and attacking Earth. Opposed by Apocalypse and Storm's mutant Brotherhood, only Death switched sides and reclaimed his honor, now seemingly studying under his father on Mars.. 4 Decimus Furius | Horseman of War A mutant from ancient Rome - implied to be the illegitimate son of the real-life Seneca the Younger - Decimus Furius is a minotaur-like mutant forced into gladiatorial combat at a young age. His appearance led to him being associated with the dark god Asterion, leading a cult to spring up around him. Decimus was chosen by Apocalypse as one of the Final Horsemen - a team chosen from throughout time and held back unless all his other plans failed. The Final Horsemen were activated following the death of Apocalypse and his return as a clone child, clashing with Wolverine's X-Force. The Final Horsemen Codename Real Name Powers Backstory Current Status Created By First Appearance Death Sanjar Javeed Can consciously spread almost any disease (must be touching specific metals) The illegitimate son of an ancient Persian king. Incredibly physically powerful, Decimus Furius is able to channel rage through his four-bladed axe, infecting anyone he strikes with a violent desire for conflict. He has a powerful healing factor which has resurrected him from death before, and may explain his appearance here, despite being slain by the Apocalypse Twins, Uriel and Eimin. 3 Autumn Rolfson | Horseman of Famine One of the first Horsemen to appear chronologically in Marvel Comics, Autumn Rolfson came to loathe her parents due to their shame over both her anorexia and mutant status. Apocalypse played on Autumn's dissatisfaction to recruit her, enhancing her ability to disintegrate biological matter. Autumn was part of multiple versions of the Horsemen, clashing with the X-Men several times. Unlike other iterations of the Horsemen, the 21st Century team didn't automatically consider themselves answerable to Death, and Autumn frequently rebelled and made plays for leadership of the team. 21st Century Horsemen of Apocalypse Codename Real Name Powers Backstory Current Status Created By First Appearance Death Warren Worthington III (aka Archangel) Metallic wings with poison-tipped feathers Founding X-Men hero brainwashed by Apocalypse Recovered heroic identity but kept Horseman powers. When Warren Worthington III's Archangel usurped Apocalypse's role, she opposed him to protect her son and died in the process. Tomb of Apocalypse reveals that this current team of Horsemen can only exist within the "Temporal Pocket" of his tomb, suggesting Apocalypse plucked them from the timestream, explaining the presence of dead members. 2 Phantom Bats of the Twelve Minds | Horseman of Pestilence Apocalypse's most mysterious servants, the Horsemen of 1013 were assembled following a deal between their master and the time-traveling Rama-Tut, who advised Apocalypse to target various ancestors of his future foes. Initially dispatched to kill Folkbern Logan - an ancestor of X-Men's Wolverine - the 11th Century Horsemen had the bad luck to be unleashed on Scandinavia during a period when a young Thor called the country home. 11th Century Horsemen of Apocalypse Codename Real Name Powers Backstory Current Status Created By First Appearance Death Unknown Gaseous, poisonous body which seemingly caused intense waking nightmares Unknown Killed by Thor Rick Remender and Daniel Acuña 2013's Uncanny Avengers #6 War Unknown Unknown, skinless horse mount Famine Unknown Unknown, winged bear mount Pestilence Phantom Bats of the Twelve Minds 'Red Plague' energy blast which instantly incinerates its target Wielding the matter-cleaving axe Jarnbjorn, Thor killed the 11th Century Horsemen to a man, though not before Phantom Bats of the Twelve Minds had killed multiple innocents. Appearing in the present, Phantom Bats of the Twelve Minds makes a beeline for Wolverine, declaring his intent to finish the mission that cost him his life. 1 The New Recruit: Jubilee | Horsemen of Arakko In a dark twist, Tomb of Apocalypse reveals that while these new Horsemen have been assigned to guard Apocalypse's tomb, they can't leave its interior. Instead, Apocalypse uses them to capture Jubilee, declaring his intent to forge a new team of Horsemen to serve by his side during his exile on Mars. Apocalypse has assembled the ultimate version of his Horsemen, but with this time-tossed roster trapped within his tomb, it seems Tomb of Apocalypse's mutant heroes - Jubilee, Wolverine, Shatterstar and Rictor - may make up the next Horsemen as this X-Men spin-off continues.
