X-Men And Fantastic Four's Next Big Crossover Teases Permanent Change For Major Marvel Villain

The Fantastic Four and X-Men form two of Marvel Comics’ key cornerstones, with the former ushering in what’s now known as the Marvel universe in 1961, and the latter’s introduction following two years later. They’ve teamed up on countless occasions in the comics, as well as had a handful of disagreements. This December, they'll cross over for the first time in live action when Avengers: Doomsday is released in theaters. Before that, however, the X-Men and Fantastic Four’s next comic book crossover event will unfold. The five-issue series DNX, from writer Jed MacKay and artist Federico Vicentini, sees the original Hank McCoy, now the white-furred Chairman of 3K rather than Beast, attempting to unleash the X-Virus, which will forcibly turn humanity into mutants. Marvel’s First Family and the mutants opposing Chairman’s vision for the future will band together to stop him, and it’s already being teased that DNX will see one major Marvel villain undergo a huge change. Reed Doesn’t Want To Give Magneto Back His Powers Though he’s long been known as the X-Men’s arch-nemesis, Magneto has been an ally to the mutant superheroes for years now. Since the “From the Ashes” relaunch, he’s been part of Cyclops’ in the current X-Men volume, but the last several issues have seen the Master of Magnetism both injured and suffering from a debilitating condition. It’s gotten bad enough that the DNX #1 preview shows the younger, blue-furred Hank clone, who still goes by Beast and opposes his older self, has taken him to the Baxter Building to be checked out. At the Fantastic Four’s headquarters, Beast informs Reed Richards, a.k.a. Mister Fantastic, that Magneto’s weakness and loss of power was because of “some kind of degenerative condition related to the resurrection we enjoyed on Krakoa.” However, he and his mutant allies have instead determined that “it’s the result of something sent back from the future,” referring to the Age of Revelation apocalyptic future where the X-Virus was released. While Reed is willing to help Beast save Magneto’s life, he won't aid in restoring the character’s powers given what a threat he’s been in the past. This point is hammered home with a flashback to when Magneto ripped the adamantium from Wolverine’s skeleton during the Fatal Attractions storyline. So already, DNX is teasing a future where the character is rendered permanently powerless if Reed is unable to be persuaded otherwise. Magneto Plays An Integral Role In DNX Marvel Comics Magneto is no stranger to losing his powers, as he previously had them taken away by the sorceress Zaladane, and was also stripped of them by Scarlet Witch at the end of House of M. However, if this happens in DNX, this would be the first time that a Marvel superhero has made a deliberate decision to not restore Magneto to his full potential. It’s unclear if Beast will push back against Reed’s demand or agree to it. Whatever ends up happening, there are still big things in store for Magneto in DNX. Upon being returned to the present after seeing the Age of Revelation future firsthand, Cyclops vowed to prevent this reality from being born, whereas Hank/Chairman is determined to bring it into existence. In X-Men #36, Chairman informed Magneto that his blood holds the key to the X-Virus, and he suggested they join forces so that he could control the virus, and Magneto could get his powers back. The man born as Max Eisenhardt refused this offer, as he knew what kind of devastation the X-Virus would unleash. Nevertheless, Chairman managed to develop a present-day version of the virus, and earlier in the DNX #1 preview, Cyclops and his X-Men team are shown in Philadelphia, as Scott Summers believes his fellow founding X-Man will release it there. If Beast and Reed can heal Magneto, with or without also restoring his powers, then from there they can hopefully derive a cure for the virus. Unfortunately, this will prove harder than expected, since the solicitation for Fantastic Four #18 teases that the Fantastic Four, Reed included, will lose their memories as “Magneto’s life hangs in the balance.” DNX #1 will be released Wednesday, September 16 by Marvel Comics.
