China has reportedly reached a major infrastructure milestone with the completion of the under-river section of the Chongtai Yangtze River Tunnel. The engineering breakthrough transforms the region’s transport network. Once operational, the tunnel will give Chongming Island (China’s third-largest island) its first-ever high-speed rail connection. Trains will cross the river without needing to slow down, cutting travel time between Chongming (via Taicang) and Shanghai Baoshan Station to just 17 minutes. Global Times reported that the development was achieved using “Linghang” (Navigator), which is the world’s largest-diameter high-speed railway shield tunneling machine. Interestingly, the colossal machine established a new global benchmark for the longest continuous under-river excavation in its class after tunneling uninterrupted for 11.325 kilometers (roughly 7 miles) of the Yangtze River bed. Engineering feat Constructing an underwater tunnel of this scale required unprecedented engineering. Crews relied on Linghang, an independently developed mega shield machine that features the world’s largest diameter for its class. A shield Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is a massive industrial machine that simultaneously excavates soil, removes debris, stabilizes the surrounding ground, and installs a permanent concrete tunnel lining. As trains traveling at high speeds displace enormous amounts of air, these tunnels require giant cross-sectional diameters to prevent uncomfortable passenger ear-popping and dangerous air-pressure shockwaves. High-speed rail TBMs rank among the largest machines on Earth. Sporting a massive 15.4-meter cutterhead, the mega shield machine is a true mechanical leviathan. Reaching depths of up to 89 meters, the tunnel withstands intense water pressures up to 0.9 MPa. Interestingly, the Linghang weighs approximately 4,000 tons. The giant machine carved out a single-hole double-track cavern with an outer segment diameter of 14.8 meters. Operating continuously beneath complex sub-river geology of riverbed silt and sand, the shield machine operated without intermediate access shafts. Equipped with digital-twin smart controls and advanced geological forecasting systems, Navigator established a global benchmark for long-distance, large-diameter shield tunneling. By tunneling under the Yangtze River, this project paves the way for a faster, direct connection between the two regions. Broader rail expansion Managed by Shanghai-Hangzhou High-Speed Railway Passenger Transport Co. and constructed by China Railway Tunnel Group, the project serves as a key artery within the larger Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway corridor. China’s high-speed rail network exceeded 50,000 kilometers by the end of last year. Over the next five years, authorities plan to expand that network to roughly 60,000 kilometers. Pushing high-speed lines through deep water barriers demonstrates mechanical durability and precision control. The success of the Chongtai section directly lays the structural blueprint for upcoming mega-projects across Guangdong, Shanghai, and coastal transit networks worldwide. By boosting the flow of people, information, and capital between cities, high-speed rail enables seamless resource integration and shared economic strengths. Analysts emphasize that these rail networks serve as vital links, driving the creation of multiple thriving economic corridors. High-speed trains will streak under the Yangtze at their full design speed of 350 km/h without needing to slow down, making it among the fastest underwater rail passages.
