World’s first boring-blasting tunnel machine unveiled, promises 30% faster excavation

China has unveiled what it says is the world’s first boring and blasting machine (BBM), a new tunneling system designed to handle some of the most difficult underground conditions. The machine rolled off the production line on Saturday at China Railway Science & Industry Group’s manufacturing base in Wuhan, central China’s Hubei Province. Officials announced the milestone, describing it as a major step for large tunnel construction in challenging geology. Tsinghua University and China Railway Science & Industry Group (CRSIC), a subsidiary of China Railway Group Ltd, worked together to develop the BBM. This machine brings together tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology and traditional drilling and blasting in one system. The company says this project is a breakthrough for China’s advanced underground engineering equipment, thanks to teamwork between industry and universities. Built to tackle difficult underground conditions Large tunnel projects often pass through unstable rock formations that create major engineering challenges. These problems include soft rock that can change shape under pressure, sudden rock bursts, and unexpected water or mud flows. These conditions can slow down construction and make it less safe. Traditional drilling and blasting methods need a lot of safety measures and usually move slowly. Conventional hard-rock tunnel boring machines also struggle to adjust when the ground changes suddenly. CRSIC said the new BBM solves these problems by using the best parts of both excavation methods. The company explains that the system can switch between different ways of working based on the rock conditions inside the tunnel. “The BBM can seamlessly alternate between modes – including pre-blasting followed by excavation, pre-excavation followed by blasting, and full-face boring – thus offering flexible adaptability to a wide range of field conditions.” New design allows multiple excavation modes The research team equipped the machine with a hollow cutterhead structure that works with a central cutterhead. This setup lets operators change excavation modes without swapping equipment, so the machine can work in different types of ground. According to China News Service, the BBM is expected to solve a long-standing challenge in tunneling through highly complex terrain. Qin Pengxiang, a research fellow with the State Key Laboratory of Hydroscience and Engineering at Tsinghua University, said laboratory testing showed the machine could improve excavation efficiency by 30 percent compared with conventional tunnel boring machines. The company also integrated several proprietary technologies to improve overall tunneling performance and support construction in unstable ground. Features improve safety and tunnel support The BBM includes retractable side cutters that can adjust the excavation width while making it easier to move through completed tunnel sections. An adaptive telescopic tail shield supports different lining segment sizes, allowing variable-diameter tunnel linings in areas affected by rock bursts or major ground deformation. To protect the machine during blasting operations, engineers added an explosion-proof shield that reduces blast impacts on sensitive internal components. The system also uses two independent conveyor belts that separately transport excavated rock and construction aggregates, helping improve material handling during excavation. Chinese officials said the machine and its core components were developed with fully independent intellectual property rights.
