You can reach them at James.t@thegamer.com World of Warcraft is getting official controller support after 24 years, but why now? That’s the question everyone in Azeroth is asking, and while the obvious answer might be that it’s an expected quality-of-life feature in 2026, there’s a far more exciting prospect: a console port. The idea of an MMORPG on console, at least a traditional one akin to World of Warcraft, used to seem completely bizarre. Add-ons are a vital part of the experience, especially if you’re playing competitively, while the limited buttons on a controller make it far less versatile for many of the macros you’ll need to maximize your build’s potential. Sure, we had Phantasy Star Online, Final Fantasy 11, and EverQuest Online Adventures in the early ‘00s, before World of Warcraft had even launched, but the idea of bringing a large-scale, mechanically complex MMORPG to consoles without fundamentally compromising the experience wasn’t really proven until Final Fantasy 14. Its controller-based interface demonstrated that a WoW-scale MMORPG could work on a gamepad without requiring a separate version designed specifically for console. Others soon followed, like The Elder Scrolls Online, further proving that console MMOs could offer parity with their PC counterparts. However, while console became fertile ground for MMORPGs, World of Warcraft stayed firmly planted on PC. Fans think the launch of Forever might finally change that. Project Helix And Controller Support: The Perfect Recipe For WoW On Console “Perfect opportunity to bring WoW to consoles,” reads one forum post. “Forever has the chance to be more than another version of WoW aimed primarily at people who already play WoW. We’re starting again at level 1. We’re returning to Azeroth. Blizzard is creating new quests, zones, dungeons, raids, classes/race combinations and progression while building an alternate future for the game. This is probably the best opportunity Blizzard will ever have to design proper controller support and a console-friendly UI from the beginning.” Reddit is littered with similar posts, with some going as far as to say that you should “get ready for the official Xbox release announcement.” It’s not just controller support that supports this idea, either. The next-gen Xbox, known as Project Helix, is a gaming PC hybrid. From what we know, it runs on a modified Windows 11 with a Big Picture-style interface, iterating on the ROG Ally handhelds. Microsoft has already begun work preparing for Project Helix by rolling out original Xbox backwards compatibility on PC, and the disc-to-digital program, ensuring that your library transitions neatly from console. Xbox libraries on PC now also display games from other storefronts, including Epic Games, Steam, and crucially, Battle.net. That means World of Warcraft could be playable on Project Helix consoles out of the box. Controller support may be Blizzard’s way of preparing for next-gen, and while newly-appointed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has been pushing for a return to exclusives, a live-service juggernaut like WoW missing out on PS5—or, in the future, even PS6—would be a sorely missed opportunity. Perhaps Project Helix is merely an excuse to bring World of Warcraft to console, starting with official controller support, before branching out further. Then again, like I said at the start of this article, this might simply be a case of Blizzard finally adding a quality-of-life feature expected from games in 2026, and nothing more. In theory, WoW will be playable on Project Helix anyway, bringing it to console on a technicality. Whether that means it will also come to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, or even Switch 2, is uncertain. Still, it's exciting to imagine WoW getting a fresh start after nearly three decades, inviting a whole new audience to take up arms.
