HELLAS VERONA’S stadium, the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi, is set to be demolished and rebuilt smaller – but more modern – in time for Euro 2032. Damiano Tommasi, a former Italy international and Roma legend – who also started his career at Verona – is now the mayor of the city and is tasked with developing the project. Tommasi has two private options on the table that will cover the £171 million cost. Tommasi keeps insisting: “We are moving forward with the upgrade process for the Bentegodi Stadium with the goal of making it compliant with the European Football Championship 2032.” This would involve demolishing the current building and rebuilding it smaller, but with world-leading technologies like a retractable pitch to accommodate concerts and turn the stadium into a multipurpose facility. But the works would also help the regeneration of the area and neighborhoods, creating more space for greenery and gardens, and improving road layouts. Tommasi said: “With respect to our intention to proceed with the expression of interest, a new phase has begun, and so we can now open the proposal to anyone interested.
