Wonder Man season 2 canceled by Marvel, report says

In yet another sign that everything is getting worse, Disney and Marvel have reportedly opted not to go forward with more Wonder Man, leaving the show's first season's cliffhanger wide open. Variety reported Thursday, citing sources, that a writers' room for Wonder Man season 2 was never formed and that the show's writers have been released to other projects. That's somewhat ironic, given that Marvel's announcement of a second season of Wonder Man was promoted with what looked like completed scripts for the show's lead characters, Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery. Series creators Destin Daniel Cretton (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) and Andrew Guest (Community) were expected to return for the second season, along with series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as struggling superpowered actor Simon Williams and Ben Kingsley as disgraced actor Trevor Slattery (aka The Mandarin), a role Kingsley played across several Marvel projects. According to Variety, Wonder Man's lead characters could still appear in other Marvel projects in the future. Wonder Man was a rare season 2 renewal for Marvel Television, which has produced one-and-done shows like The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Ms. Marvel. Only a handful of live-action Marvel Television series like Loki and Daredevil: Born Again have spanned multiple seasons. Wonder Man was released under Marvel's "less homework, more personal stories" Marvel Spotlight banner, but it teed up future stories for Williams and Slattery. While Wonder Man season 2 is no longer on the table, co-creator Cretton has a lot on his plate. In addition to this week's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Cretton is also developing a live-action adaptation of the beloved manga/anime series Naruto for Lionsgate. It's unclear if Cretton will return for future Tom Holland Spider-Man movies or ever get around to Shang-Chi 2. (That said, the director told Screen Rant this week that a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is "in active development right now.") Wonder Man debuted on Disney Plus in January. The eight-episode series focuses on Los Angeles actor Simon Williams, a struggling day player with a habit of overthinking the small roles he gets. Oh, and Williams secretly has superpowers. Williams befriends washed-up actor (and former "terrorist") Trevor Slattery as the two fight to land dream roles in the movie Wonder Man. We gushed over Wonder Man's blend of humor and subtle superhero action in Polygon's review of the series, calling it "one of the most compelling, purely enjoyable shows in Marvel Studios’ roster." Critic Tasha Robinson praised Wonder Man as "the rarest thing in the Marvel playbook: a story that’s unique, personal, character-focused, and designed to stand on its own." Next up for Marvel Television is VisionQuest, the final part of the saga that started in WandaVision and continued in Agatha All Along. VisionQuest will premiere on Disney Plus in October.
