The experience is marketed as ‘extreme’ (Picture: Newsham Scream Park 2023) A theme park in Liverpool has been slammed online for creating a ‘simulation of sexual assault, sexual degradation and sexual violation’. Newsham Scream Park launched in 2023 in a former Victorian orphanage, asylum, and hospital. It has an 18+ attraction called the Hellfire Club, where people must sign a waiver to enter. The attraction promises a ‘raw, real, and unapologetically terrifying’ physically interactive horror experience designed to create fear, discomfort, uncertainty and sensory overload. Robyn Clove, 33, visited Newsham on October 15 with friends expecting to kick off her Halloween celebrations, but says she was ‘humped’ and sexually degraded by the actors. ‘It was creepy, irresponsible and I feel like it’s a massive overstep,’ Robyn tells Metro. ‘My friend left crying her eyes out. I left there angry. ‘There were these two Ed Gein-style characters who sat us down, we’re blindfolded and the circle us calling us sluts and whores, humping us from all sides. The right side of your brain is like “this is pretend” but the left side of your brain is going “wait why does it feel wrong”.’ At this point, her friend was making ‘sounds of distress’ but when Robyn asked if she was alright, her friend said she was okay, if a little shocked. ‘Then there was a priest in a confession booth who stood over us and said things like “you want to suck your dad’s d**k” and “you want to swallow your uncle’s c*m”,’ Robyn adds. The tattoo artist and business owner from Liverpool said there was a nun who passed her a note calling her a ‘c*m slut’. Lastly, Robyn had a hood pulled over her eyes while she was laid on a bed with male actors surrounding her. ‘They’re calling me slut, whore, and intensely moaning like in porn,’ she explains. ‘Then a man takes my hand, rubs it all the way up his hairy leg and starts pumping my finger into what I believe was a fleshlight as he screamed and moaned as if I was pleasuring him.’ An online waiver and a safe word With attending the 18+ event a last minute decision, Robyn was given a QR code with an online waiver form, just minutes before entering. She could have waited and read the 1,300 word form in full, but ‘quickly glanced’ at it and signed. When Metro asked Newsham Scream Park for a copy of the waiver, they did not provide it. Robyn also says there was no clear, easy to spot signage that would warn those in the queue of what lays ahead. While a safe word ‘escape’ is available to use, the tattooist believes the environment makes it hard to think clearly. On the Newsham Scream Park website, there is no mention of explicit sexual content featuring in its Hellfire Club and explicitly states there is no sexual activity involved. Robyn was angry after her experience at Newsham Scream Park because she didn’t feel properly informed (Picture: David Edwards) The website reads: ‘The experience does not involve sexual activity. ‘Any deliberate inappropriate touching of performers will result in immediate removal from the attraction.’ Sexual content is also not clearly mentioned on the website in the summary of what to expect. It reads: ‘The Hellfire Club is an adults-only immersive horror experience incorporating live performers, physical interaction, special effects, darkness, loud and sudden noises, foul language, adult content, horror and religious themes, and material which some guests may find offensive, distressing or upsetting.’ ‘The experience is deliberately designed to create fear, discomfort, uncertainty and sensory overload.’ Robyn says she felt totally unprepared for the experience. The terms and conditions under the Hellfire experience page clearly state there isn’t sexual activity in the experience (Picture: Newsham Scream Park website) She says: ‘You put this on in the name of Halloween and you expose these scenes of a graphic sexual nature to young girls and boys, and people with trauma.’ While the company website states the attraction isn’t suitable for those with trauma, it doesn’t say anything about being unsuitable for survivors of sexual assault. A police investigation Newsham Scream Park did not clarify whether it DBS checked its scare actors who would be touching and degrading guests in a sexual manner. Since Robyn shared her account of the events online, which reached more than 50,000 views, more women have reached out sharing their own stories. Merseyside Police has begun an investigation into the event. A spokesperson told Metro: ‘We’re aware of allegations relating to a Halloween themed event at Newsham Park. ‘Officers have contacted a woman after allegations were made online about an incident on Thursday 15 October and further enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.’ When Metro approached Newsham Scream Park for a statement it said it ‘clearly identified as an 18+ attraction with ID required’ and that all guests had to sign the digital waiver. ‘There is CCTV in place covering the entirety of this attraction and the full event to protect all participating guests and actors,’ a spokesperson said. ‘Guest welfare is a priority throughout the attraction and our terms and conditions, which must be agreed to before entering, outline the nature of the experience, including its adult and horror themes, physical interaction and sensory effects. ‘They also highlight that some elements may cause distress, identify circumstances in which the attraction may not be suitable, and explain that guests can end their participation immediately, at any time, using the safe word provided without explanation. ‘We encourage all guests to read the information provided and carefully consider whether the experience is right for them before choosing to enter.’ Those who change their minds about entering the experience are also entitled to a refund.
