The first batch of women from Wanaparthy in Telangana were trained in various aspects of attending to needs to mothers and newborns, at the Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI) in Wanaparthy. The increasing migration to cities alongside working couples who live away from families created some gaps in care-giving for people in old age, toddlers and mothers and their newborns. The latter has led to a quiet rise in demand for japa care providers who take care of mothers and newborns, aid in recovery post delivery and prepare nutritious meals for six to seven weeks after delivery.Sensing the demand, Wanaparthy district administration trained rural women. The first batch of 36 women bagged jobs with a monthly salary of ₹20,000 to take care of mothers and newborns in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. They were trained at Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI) in taking care of newborns, aiding mothers in recovery, hygiene, preparation of nutritious post-natal diet, communication, customer relations and financial literacy. Since Japa care does not figure among the regular courses prescribed for RSETIs, UBI RSETI Wanaparthy approached and received a ₹6.9 lakh grant for the programme from NABARD under its Livelihood and Enterprise Development Programme (LEDP). The district officials said that the RSETI in Wanaparthy is perhaps the first to offer training in japa care.District Collector Adarsh Surabhi said that he sensed the demand out of personal experience. The administration overcame the challenge of this (japa) being an unfamiliar segment in rural parts of the State, by working with the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) and support of print and electronic media to create awareness on the work, demand in urban areas and income potential. A 20-day residential training programme was conducted from October 3 to 28.What were they trained in?Faculty from Government College of Nursing in Wanaparthy provided training in mother and newborn care, supplemented by guest lectures from professors of the Government Medical College. Practical sessions were held at the Nursing College and exposure visits were organised at Mother and Child Care Hospital, Gopalpet, and the Government General Hospital, Wanaparthy. A domain skill trainer held sessions on preparing nutritious diets. The RSETI faculty trained the women on financial literacy, communication, customer relations and self-employment. Director of the UBI-RSETI, B Anil Kumar, said that a few more women have shown interest in undergoing the training. Published - November 07, 2026 08:44 pm IST
