Woman's observation about elderly Europeans makes her question Indian lifestyle

(Photos: X/@Kavitastocks)An Indian traveller’s observation about elderly Europeans travelling independently has sparked a debate online, with her questioning whether lifestyle differences affect how people age in India. While travelling across Europe, X user Kavita noticed something that stayed with her. Many of the elderly people she encountered, including those in their 70s and 80s, were travelling alone, walking long distances and managing their own luggage. She shared a photograph showing several older travellers on the move, some carrying backpacks while others pulled suitcases behind them.“These are the ‘old people’ I keep seeing while travelling in Europe, and many of them are well over 70 or even 80, travelling alone, carrying their own suitcases, walking everywhere, and looking incredibly fit,” she wrote. The sight, she said, made her reflect on ageing and mobility in India.“It honestly makes me wonder: Is there something terribly wrong with Indian lifestyle when it comes to our diet, and physical activity? People above 50 find it difficult to walk for long and we can see the huge number of wheelchair in airports during travels,” her post read. For her, however, the question was about more than simply living longer. “The real goal of being fit isn’t just to live longer. It’s to stay independent enough to enjoy those extra years,” she added.See the post:Her post soon opened up a wider discussion about diet, exercise, infrastructure and the cultural differences that may shape how people remain active as they grow older. Some users agreed with her broader point, arguing that everyday food habits and physical activity play an important role in maintaining mobility. One user pointed to differences in diet, writing, “They eat protein, fiber-rich food with every meal. Most Indians have carbs heavy meals because that's the only thing they can afford.”Others felt the comparison between India and Europe was far more complicated.“This is a cultural difference as well. Walking in Europe is much more preferred compared to travel by car and people are used to this since they are young. In India, the weather conditions, road conditions are not much that promote walking. Don’t think this is a fair comparison,” another user commented. The post ultimately left the internet debating a larger question: whether ageing independently is shaped mainly by personal lifestyle choices, or by the environments and systems people spend their lives navigating.- EndsPublished By: Srimoyee ChowdhuryPublished On: Aug 31, 2026 15:55 IST
